305 cam only upgrade

I have a 91 Z28 with a 305 TPI. It is not the original motor but the motor itself has about 5000 miles on it. What I would like to do a cam swap with one that has a very "lumpy" idle. It is my understanding I would need to change the valve springs as well with this. All I want is this motor to have a little more pep and have a nice old school rumble to it. Before you tell me to just get a 350, I have one that i just got completely rebuilt from top to bottom and it is going in another project car. I don't want to spend a ton of money. Any suggestions on a cam for what I want? I'm considering the COMP CAMS 12-601-8 off of summit. Latter down the road I probably will change the heads also but not for quite a while. Any help would be great thanks.

Re: 305 cam only upgrade

That would depend on EXACTLY what the motor is.

What heads are on it? (casting # only please) What pistons are in it? (brand and part # only please)

Without that info, it's impossible to pick "the right" cam; basically it would just be a random pile of parts, and you could stick any random cam into it and have an equally random chance of getting any given random results.

YOu can be just about 100% iron-clad positively GUARANTEED though, that putting that cam in a TPI motor will make it go slower than a stock cam, maybe even ALOT slower. If all you want is some poseur "sound" and don't care if there's any reality backing it up, that's a good plan. If you care about actually making it run better, that wouldn't be the choice; wouldn't be anywhere near the top of all possible choices.

Tell us EXACTLY what you have, BY PART #, and maybe we can help.

I don't know the exact specs on the motor. When I bought the car a few years ago the guy said the original motor went on it and he put a new jasper motor in it.

Go over it with a fine tooth comb Need to know you have before you can get a cam. Casting numbers help alot. Plus need to find out if its a roller block or not
