90 v6 runs great but stalls when hot - getting worse by the day
Hey, it's been two years of running great, but I have a new unusual problem.
Two weeks ago my wife was coming back from an emmission test. 20 minutes away from the emmission station, the car just turned off. She coasted off the road, and restarted the car. She made it a few more miles and it shut off again. This happened 2 more times, but less distance was travelled before it shut off before she arrived home.
I have started the car at home, and it sounds normal and I can rev the engine when the car is cold and it seems fine. After about 10-15 minutes, the car will just turn off as though the key was turned off. Sometimes I am holding the idle at 200rpm, other times it is at idle and simly turns off.
I can hear the fuel pump run when the car shuts off for 2-3 seconds. I do not have any codes, and the car does go into closed loop mode. Rpm desired is about 700. Car always runs rich unless i am on the highway. I have 190K original miles without any engine or transmission work.
After reading the site, I am guessing I should replace the ignition module, but wanted some advice instead of just guessing.
I have a fuel gauge, but do not really know what to look for as the car just shuts down like turning off the key. There is no sputtering or surging, it's as thought the ignition system simply turns off.
One other thing I want to mention is that for 10 years or so, I can go out to the car and try to start it, and I get nothing. No crank, no codes. If I wait 30 minutes, I can put my key in and it will start. This only happens about 3 times a year, but I am not sure if this could be related now. I have not experienced this issue for atleast 6 months, and I believed this is associated with my anti-theft system (resistor key.)
Hope you can shed some light on this issue!

Start with cleaning or replacing plugs, cap and rotor first, just good practice as these are service items anyway and you never know. But yeah, sounds like pretty typical ignition module failure, I assume the V6 version works the same as the V8 hei.

If it were carbed I'd have said vapor lock...but TPI...hmm...normal checks. Fuel pressure, timing all that goodness.

Ok, re-read the post, and you're right. He'd still have power with vapor lock, just the motor wouldn't turn over and run.

I killed it
So I was able to start it today as usual and move it around the garage.
Threee years ago I had a mess on my hands when my fuel pump went bad, and I had two fuel injectors fail at the same time. After spending 5 hours this mornig reading post, I decided to exchange my 6 injectors with rebuilt ones I had from two years ago that I never installed. They were still in the orginal packing. All six had between 12.5 and 12.7 ohms. After I pulled the old ones out, I found one that had 4 ohms and another that had 11 ohms. I thought for sure that was the problem.... The other four had 12.5 ohms. Unfortunately for me, I did not mark two of the wires and think I have them swapped (2 on the same side right next to each other). Needless to say, now the car won't start at all. With the shorted injectors, the car would start. Can any one tell me if the injectors have individual pulses or are they banked in 3 (right side versus left side injectors get a pulse at th same time? If not, I gues I'm going to have to get a wiring diagram to check pin connections from the main plug for the injectors and coolant sensor.
Other things I tried today. I have 38-40 psi on the fuel gauge. I also replaced the coil with the original I had replaced two years ago. The car wants to fire, but just doesn't.
I'm thinking about replacing the ECM. Any other thoughts from the group?

I just put a fuel pump in my 89 camaro. not even a month ago. i go to start it saturday and it doesnt even hit a lick. i hear NO FUEL PUMP. i drop the tank take the pump out clean it and it works when i hook it to the battery. when i hook it up to the f/p hook up above the tank and nothing. i have fooled with it enough and im about tired of it. i just was wondering if anyone had a clue what was going on. and what i need to check.

okay there are two identical relays on the drivers side against the firewall. is it the one closest to the fender or the one closest to the distributor. it has no markings on it.
