reusing old roller lifters?
i found the original roller lifters that came in my vortec 305.
i was wondering if i could use them,
all but one has a little surface rust, they all roll really smothly and nice (no dirt or anything inside the bearing) all in all theyre pretty clean...
i just wanted to know how i could clean them? soak them in something maybe?
thanks

Re: reusing old roller lifters?
you could try a little WD-40 and very fine emory cloth for light surface rust but if they are pitted get some from the junkyard they are cheep enough

I did this on my last motor I built. Saved $400 from not buying nice new rollers!!! Sweet, beer money!
Used rollers went bad and blew up my new $5000 engine. Not sweet.
Not worth it, in my opinion.

Re: reusing old roller lifters?
you may be OK but again, do you want to do it correctly?
I always replace the lifters. If it's full rebuild time then it's full rebuild time.
It's the old "ounce of prevention vs a pound of cure"

Re: reusing old roller lifters?
yeah youre right. i rebuilt the motor about 6 months ago, and i overeved it and ruined a lifter, so i was thinking of going roller if i could do it cheap.
though im being constantly reminded to not do cheap things by my car itself haha
i get cheap stuff it breaks or doesnt work.
anyways thanks for the advice guys
