Need help tightening belt
Need help tightening belt
I put on two brand new belts today on my 1983 Camaro with a V6 engine.
The one belt is staying and and I was able to get it on tight because the alternator is on a track in which you can pull the alternator up and then ratchet it into position, the second belt went on very easy and I can not for the life of me figure out how to tighten it.
I have uploaded three pictures, Fig A shows the track that allows me to tighten the one belt, Fig 2 Shows how loose the second belt is and Fig D shows a bunch of bolts and I am guessing that one of those may tighten the belt?
Any help would be VERY appreciated as the second belt is so lose I still have no power steering.
Thanks!

It looks like you cranked down on that alternator bolt way too hard fyi, as for tightening the other, I can't see where its located from the pictures, but one of the accessories each belt goes to will have a slotted bracket for the purpose of tensioning it with a multi-v setup. Just look for which thing the other belt goes to has a slotted bracket that allows it to rotate, unfortunately I do not recall which, but I am wanting to say it is the PS pump, or at least on my 2.8 it was if memory serves.

I'm not familiar with your engine in particular, however this generalization works for most V belt drives:
Slotted adjustments are part of an arc. If you continue the circle of the arc completely, the centre of the circle will be the pivot. The pivot will also need to be loosened to tighten the belt of course. And also look out for a second slot for the same adjustment. Likewise, that arc will also have the same centre pivot.

I've never even SEEN a 6-cyl in one of these cars, though I know they exist, so I can't tell you where the bolts are; but in general, there are at least 2 and more likely 3 adjustment bolts. Most likely at least one is in the back, behind the pump, probably 2. YOu will have to loosen them all and re-tighten them. One or more might be easier to get to from underneath.
As eseibel said, they go through slotted holes, so the ones in your 3rd pic that don't go into slots, don't have to be disturbed.
THe one under your thumb in the first pic is the pivot.
Whatever you do, DO NOT pry on the pump reservoir to tighten it!! Doing so will almost certainly distort the reservoir which is nothing but some thin flimsy sheet metal. There's a HUGE O-ring that seals the pump body into it, and the SLIGHTEST deformation of the reservoir will make that O-ring leak like it isn't even there. Pry ONLY on the brackets, or "rent" the tool for that from some one of the parts stores with that program.

You can unbolt the air pump pulley & run 2 same size alternator belts.
Make sure you compare the old belts to the new ones, that p/s belt looks too long for the adjustment thats left.
