My alternator is getting hot to the touch and the lead to the bat. is melting Any ideas?

 

my alternator gets hot to the touch too. Heck, everything metal which is under the hood gets hot to the touch. The cable going from the alternator to the positive connection block should be wrapped in the plastic ribbed sleeve

 

What's the batt voltage with the car not running?

What is it with it running?

Put the meter on AC volts. What's the reading at the alt output terminal?

 

Ok so when i mean hot to the touch really hot. seems unusual.
i will test bat componets tom. thank you very much

 

test it and find out just and idea maybe its a high amp alternator and its putting out alot and melting your wire.

my gauge when my alt is charging its is around 14 ball park give or take .5

i can be completely wrong but just a thought they have tons of alternators for our motors with different out put specs

 

im betting on a bad or failing ground wire
