thats almost exactly what my car sounded like before my AIR pump seized the other day.
The Pump is located below the AC Compressor.

Re: Car making weird sound. Maybe a pulley or Smog pump?
Its real easy to confirm. Pull the serp belt off and spin the pulleys. 1/2" drive rachet or breaker bar and 10 second sis all it takes to pop it off.
Re: Car making weird sound. Maybe a pulley or Smog pump?
the OP was already asked what happened when he did that. he has not yet done it.
Here is where I will sound like an a-hole to the youngsters
it's as if the OP does not want to perform the troubleshooting which is needed
in the video game and text messaging world everything is instantaneous. Maybe just maybe by posting the question a few more times there might be a magic bullet vs the needed troubelshooting and diagnostics
it doesn't work that way and experience will be what brings the OP to that realization
my own son is guilty of it as well
he had an issue, asked my advice, I told him what to try. 10 minutes later he came out and aksed if I would look at the car. I asked him again if he tried my suggestion (he could not have because it would have taken 30-45 minutes)
he turned around, went back into the garage and about 45 minutes later I heard the sweet sound of a healthy LT1. I went to the garage, he smiled and simply said "shut up"
I then went under the hood with him to work on something else but I had to make him learn despite how badly I wanted to just go do it for him

you've been given valuable guidance by some in this thread. The ball is now in your court and it's up to you what you do with it.
Good luck. If you do remove the belt and start spinning and wiggling, and need more input, there are many here ready to help.

it seems you understand. The most challenging job in the world is being a parent. The most rewarding job in the world is being a parent.

Hey Torque-is-good, I couldn't agree with you more. The only way to learn how to fix these cars is to go roll up your sleeves and do it! Hell that's the way most of us had to learn especially before youtube and the internet came around. I wonder how many folks that comment will p*ss off?

I learned a lot from him in exchange for a little bit of my labor. My folks thought I was crazy at the time to be working for free but thanks to him, I've saved $ tens of thousands by doing repairs myself and also able to determine a decent used car. I'd rather lose 4 - 6 hours on a saturday and have the money to take the family out to dinner rather than pay someone to do what i can do myself and not go out w/family.

I remember a deal I had with an owner of a general repair shop who also rebuilt transmissions. I was 16 1/2 and new with my license. I agreed to clean up his shop on Saturdays and while there, he would show me the basics, how to use tools correctly and diagnose problems. I did it off and on for almost 6 months and would pop by now and then. He became an older friend of mine, may he now rest in peace.

I agree, I started pumping gas at a friend of my Dad's service station when I was 12, when it was slow he taught me the same basics. As I got older (16) I was allowed to go work at my uncles body shop, the rest is history.
