What's this wire?

I has a fire in the engine compartment of my 82 Trans Am and had a good bit of damage to some of the wiring but nothing I can fix. What concerns me is this red wire that looped out of the plug of the wiring harness that plugs into the firewall on the drivers side of the car. I think it's a fuable link. If so, what are my chances that I'm going to have damage to the harness inside the dash. He're a link to the pic.

Re: What's this wire?

depends on how bad the fire was. the plug doesnt look damaged at all, so chances of the wires in the dash being burnt up are minimal. was it an electrical fire, or gas fire? as for what that wire is exactly, its hard to tell from the pic.

Re: What's this wire?

then yea, the dash wires shouldnt be burned at all if thats the extent of the damage in the bay.

Re: What's this wire?

C'mon guys. I really need some help on what this wire is. I've been told it's a fusible link. If that's what it is I nedd to know how to replace it.

Re: What's this wire?

The last F.L. I fixed was due to a previous-owner crimp-job on the car failing after over a decade of use.

I referenced the wiring diagrams in the Helms factory service manual. They're great books to own when you're doing your own work.

Usually on GM stuff, fusible links are more commonly at the starter wiring or nearer the battery, not at the driver's side firewall.

Good luck.

Re: What's this wire?

yea, there isnt a fusable link near the bulk head connector. you dont really need to know what the wire does to fix it. just cut off the destroyed part and properly splice in new wire and youre done.
