Battery drawing power when car is off.

My battery keeps going dead and I asked a neighbor how I could test it. He said I can use a test light. So I disconnected the positive and put a test light in that terminal and the light turned on. He said that if it does that my battery is drawing power from somewhere. Great!!! So how can I pinpoint my problem and what would cause this.

Thanks for the help.

Side note. I know its not my battery its literally brand new just bought. How do I check my alternator to see if its doing its job? Thank you once again.
