Any Intrest In Nascar's EFI?

So with Nascar going to EFI anyone more intrested? I see alot of pics and info of them using a Holley EFI system but I cant find good info on the setup teams will be using. Would have to support over 900 hp so seems intresting to me

Its just a big throttle body Fuel injection system. Antiquated system really. not sure why they didnt go with a port/direct injection system. something to do with running a mechanical fuel pump still I think.

The system they are going to use will likely bear little resemblance to anything you would ever put (or want to put) on your street/strip car. Such has been the case with race cars vs. street cars since almost forever.

Nascar is a particularly odd bird since they are always trying to make things look kinda similar to a race-prepped street car (their legacy, and part of it's attraction to the fan base). Remember that this was a "win on Sunday, sell on Monday" world for real back in the old days. Of course, there hasn't been a stock part on a Stock Car in 40+ years. But that's not the point. They got their own gig going on and wild looking EFI intake manifolds just don't fit the look. They're pretty committed to having a round air cleaner on top of something that looks kinda like a 4bbl.

Kind of a shame, I'd rather them design something that could innovate and shift the paradigm... something that could trickle down to us...

But no they just want to run throttle body injection. Whatever.

They are NOT using TBI. Where did you even hear that from? Read this.

Im not up for the idea. I mean yes times have changed, but nascar always said make racing safer, cut cost some and blah blah blah. why go to an expensive EFI system? There more problematic situations that can happen during a race that a carb will not do. ECM failure? injector goes bad? More money and tuning involved. That can cause a driver to lose the champion when they do that dumb 10 race chase deal. blah. I think its a joke, i dont see why they have to change something if it already does the job very well. It was nascar's original root's probably the very last of there root's anyway. Its transformed into nothing but a MONEY Sport! Some people are thrilled about the changed, a lot of old school fans are not. A lot of older people say they dont even watch the sport anymore because its simply nothing but drivers wining or not so thrilling to watch. If you watch interviews from the beginning of the 1988 nascar season you will hear a drivers interview of them discussing how much they HATED the restrictor plates. Its slow down the cars yes, but its put them to close in a pack together. And you call that safer nascar? Give me a break. I prefer the old school way run what you brung and let it all hang lose, with some rules. I say carb all the way, that just my opinion guys.

I'm a huge NASCAR fan and I think they are doing a great job. I look forward to the 2012 season.

Theres a lot of things EFI can do that carb never will. For one, you can have MUCH more accurate fuel delivery than a carb. Getting it to within +/- 2% of whats desired is fairly easy, and you have much better control over the engine, especially if your using the PCM to run the spark as well. It can also eliminate much of the need to retune in the field for each track as the PCM can compensate for many conditions.

There is a lot of good technology in nascar, but its still way behind a lot of the other racecar classes, and is essentially the last major modern segment to still use carbs.

As for them going bad, Ive been running these systems for years, and Ive yet to have an injector or ECM go bad, FWIW. If theyre built right, they simply just dont go bad. Around the early 2000's they got most of it down pat and theyre very reliable now.

Re: Any Intrest In Nascar's EFI?

Now, what would be really sweet is if nascar would only standardize the throttle body and restricter plates, and leave the rest up to the teams. They'll probably have all the usual restrictions on what they can do and run, but it would be nice to see them mix it up a bit and allow teams to go all out and see what they can really squeeze out of the engines with only limited CFM.
