weird problem???
I have a 91 formula with a 305 tbi 5speed. Well today I drove it for an hour parked it went to work came outside went to start it won't turn over. Beat on the starter, wiggled cables, tried to cross solenoid. Nothing at all. I called someone to come help me roll start it well I tried that and it wld fire but all of a sudden die. Well I check the car down for about 30 min find nothin. Right before i give up I turn key it starts runs fine. I shut it off won't turn again. Wait an hour hit the key fires right up fine drive it.home. haven't tried it since. What cld this be????

Is there a click when it won't start? If so, check the connections on the solenoid. Mine were loose and that caused the crossing of solenoid to not work. Sometimes it would start, and sometimes not. Be careful and don't horse 'em cuz you could snap the solenoid in half like i did, actually it snapped in half when i tried to loosen one of the connections.

I had the same problem and it turned out to be the battery. Autozone did a voltage check and said it was fine, then it stranded me. I took the battery to Pep Boys and they did a load test and the battery failed. It would not hold a deep charge but would read 12.7 volts. Replaced battery and everything is good. Take your battery to Pep Boys and have them do a load test. It takes a while.

is your security light on or does it go out after a few seconds with key 'on'?
I agree with camarorookie, batteries can be weird. Even a load test might not show that it's bad. Sears said my batt was fine after load test, went back the next day, same person performed load test. That time it showed the battery was bad.

Something is up with vats. You need to find out what chip you have, then bypass with a resistor. That will rule out your key, the ignition cylinder and wiring that goes to the bottom of the column. There are a few videos on youtube on bypassing GM Vats.
