83 crossfire weird idle ive checked everything posted on here *updated*
i posted on here a while ago about my crossfire not having a smooth idle. ive rear and reread tons of post, checked out everything i can think of and i still cant get it i figured i would do another thread with everything i have done hoping that someone may see something that i have missed
what the car is doing is at idle in drive it is taching at about 600 rpm but you can feel your seat shake, and if you look at the pass seat you can see it shake as well. just bad enough to be annoying, and you can hear the exhaust is not as smooth as it should sound. and when in park if you rev it up with stepping on the gas about half way it kinda drops for a second then reves up. and just a couple times if im playing with the car as in revving it up or whatever it backfires through one of the tb's. its only dont that a couple times in this last month of working on it but i figured id mention it
as far as driving the car it feels great at high rpms, you can only feel a little hesitation if you are cruising at really low rpms liek around 1000
its a 83 dt 500 car 305 crossfire of course. car was sitting untouched for over 5 years till i got it a couple months ago. this is what i have done so far
new ac delco fuel pump/strainer/fuel filter
hooked up a fuel pressure gauge between the two tb and i adjusted it all the way out and i am at around 13.5 psi
took both tb off cleaned them up and re installed with new gaskets on the bottom.
new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil
took off egr cleaned it up and re installed ( i also had a spare one laying around that i tried out and it made no difference)
had a extra map sensor changed it out made no difference
checked for vacume leaks and can not find any ( i even blocked off the cruise lines and the canister lines, made no difference)
did a compression test on all cyl and they all came out between 135 and 145
took it to a mechanic friend of mine ( dosnt really know much about crossfires) he hooked his scanner to the car and said the iac were at 22 i think and the tps was at 54 i do believe, anyway he said they are right where they need to be. the only thing he saw was the vacume seemed a little low, he told me i prob had carbon buildup on valves, thats when i went home and did a compression test so that rules that out
built a manometer and i do believe that i balanced the tb's out good
now the smog is disconnected, the vacume port behind the tb for the smog is blocked off and my oil pressure gauge on dash isnt working but im sure that has nothing to do with it
and of course ive run lucas injector cleaner and i put some seafoam in the oil, drove about 30 miles and changed out the oil
the only thing im really down to is if the distributor itself is going bad, or maybe a worn cam

no, i cant feel any, i mean if there is some it is very very very small. but even if there was slop there since the car is just at idle and the tb are balanced out wouldn't it still idle smooth?

Hook up a vacuum gauge to it,is the neddle steady at idle?
Also make sure the egr isn't getting any vacuum at idle. Check the timing.

ill go back outside and check the vacume through the port that goes to the vacume canister, where would i check the vacume for the egr, at the tb or should i check it after the sensor b4 the egr?

Hook the gauge right where it would normally go on the egr. It should not have vacuum at idle.
To check engine vacuum, hook to the fitting at behind the t bodys, that way you know its manifold vacuum.

ok here is what i have come up with. as far as timing it is like this you kind of have to look upside down on my crude drawing
-I
-I
Vvv
as far as vacume in park at idle my gauge is showing a fluctuation between 16.25 ppsi and 16.75 its analog so that is my best guess at reading the gauge
in drive it is showing 15.00 ppsi to 15.50
and as far as the egr i spliced the line directly b4 the egr and it shows no vacume

is there supposed t be a little fluctuation in vacume when it is at idle?
Re: 83 crossfire weird idle ive checked everything posted on here *updated*
I guess there could be, I'm sure some of those cylinders are running alittle leaner or richer then others, thats a problem w/ crossram manifolds.

it still has it. its a very very slight rough idle, nothing i cant live with but i have had a old school mechanic look at it and he says they had a idle like this when new, idk it feels like a mild cam in the car. im actually doing a 5 speed swap in 2 weeks so i figured all i have left is a intake man gasket and im gona send the tbs out to get rebuilt. we will see what happens then
