Re: How much horsepower can i get?

You can make 400hp with a 305 and a carb, but it will be making the power somewhere north of 6,000rpm and need a perfect match of heads, cam, intake, timing, and exhaust. I'm making about 400hp with my 350 at around 5600rpm, a 305 would have to rev 15% more for the 15% decrease in cubic inches - about 6450rpm, way too high for a stock 305 - but not too high for a built bottom end.

mijares, welcome aboard thirdgen.org.

Paul's response probably looks a little weird, because I moved your post out of the "how to get 400 HP out of a 305" thread where you posted it, to it's own thread. I moved it because we try to keep each thread on a single topic.

So, how do you get 400 HP out of a 5.7? Depends upon how you're measuring that HP. Gross flywheel HP, not too hard. Rear wheel HP, a lot more difficult.

But, 400 GFWHP is a piece of cake - swap in an LS1...

Okay, assuming a "normal" Gen I 350 - Vortec heads, Comp XE268 cam, Performer RPM intake, 650 Holley double pumper carb, 1-5/8" primary tube headers and free flowing exhaust.
