Coil in cap check?

I have a 86 camaro 305 no spark my pickup coil has 730ohms my module checks ok but it does have a burn mark on the metal side and a bubble on the plastic side but the say it's good. How do I check the coil in the cap with my meter? My rotor looks ok too thanks

Re: Coil in cap check?

A burned spot on the heat sink and a bubble in the plastic says it all. Bench tests of HEI modules are notoriously faulty. Replace the module. Use your DVOM on the ohms scale to test the coil. B+ to B- should test at .5-1.0 ohm, the tab that connects to the rotor button to B- should test at 20k ohms. All terminals should show infinite resistance to the coil frame. A coil that tests low in primary resistance will stress the module.

Re: Coil in cap check?

I put in a new module, I checked my coil from B-to B+ [mine has C+ on the cover] checks 0.00 on the ohms 20 K scale on my meter. The center button to B- checks 14.78 should check at least 20.0, and my plus and minus has no resistance. does that mean my in cap coil is bad? Also what does infinite mean on my meter, 1.0? Thanks ASE Doc

Re: Coil in cap check?

The meters Im used to will say OFL when they see infinity. Whatever the meter says when the leads are held apart is infinity. Im also used to auto ranging meters. Try testing B+ to B- in the lowest range of your meter. Since it should be less than 1 ohm, your meter may just be unable to identify the resistance on the 20K scale. 14.7 K should still work. The difference in windings between the primary and secondary determines KV potential. However, aside from physical damage from overheating, E core coil failure is not very common.

Re: Coil in cap check?

My lowest range on the meter is 20k most likely it's not picking it up, if 14.78 is o.k I will just see if it starts then go from there, I think I'll get a new meter too thanks again.
