82 and 83 functional air induction hood question

The hood on my 83 Z28 has the functional air induction flaps, as it's an Lu5 car. Well, the Crossfire set up is long gone, and with it went the "functional" part of my air induction hood. The only time that the air flaps do open now is when I plug my code reader in. Does anyone know which prong(s) in the ALDL make the flaps open when it is plugged? I want to run a switch in order open and close the flaps and bring the functional aspect back into my hood.

Thanks,
Chris

I'm not sure exactly how the ALDL plays into the switch, but here is a wiring diagram that should help:

Don't have my manual in front of me, but when you use the old paperclip trick to jumper two of the terminals to retrieve any stored codes from the ECM by flashing the Check Engine light, that triggers the flaps to open. Your code reader has to get the ECM codes, so it is basically doing the same thing as the paperclip trick.

I want to say it's the upper right two terminals of the ALDL connector that you jumper together, but don't quote me and don't try it, as you might fry something.

To bring this thread back from the dead, can anyone else chime in on what terminals are the correct ones to pin in order to keep the flaps open? Can anyone back him up on his thoughts?

So cant u just run your own power wire and ground wire to the flaps and wire a switch in that?

You're right, the flaps are controlled by a solenoid that I could very easily wire power/a switch to, duh. I guess I was over thinking/over complicating a 5 minute job, haha.

Kinda stealing your thread here but correct me if im wrong. You have a carb on your motor and you're still able to fit the functional hood right? I have an 82 that has an iroc hood and im wanting to put a functional hood on. What carb and manifold do you have on yours?

You are over thinking this, the CFI used the ecm to trigger the flapper motor. Just buy a vacuum switch from a 83-84 carb'ed trans am to trigger the solenoid. Basically this switch mounted on the firewall and under full throttle as vacuum dropped to zero switch grounded solenoid.

Under that hood I've run an Edelbrock Performer manifold with a Holley 570 dual feed, a Holley 4160 600, and an Edelbrock 1406. The key to clearance with the functional unit in tact is the air cleaner that you run. It's been a while but I removed the rubber from the hood that met with the original CFI air cleaner housing. I don't remember if it was because I HAD clearance issues or because I THOUGHT I was going to have them.

Re: 82 and 83 functional air induction hood question

I have a holley high rise manifold and 750 carb. So I guess it's really just a mount the hood on and see if it fits. Ide love to see some pics if you have any.

I unfortunately don't have any pictures that would help with clearance..I have to ask though, is the high rise and 750 for your 305?

Re: 82 and 83 functional air induction hood question

Yeah they were on the car when I got it it's the street dominator and street avenger series or which goes with which I'm not sure. But to answer your question I do have a 305 that has been rebuilt but I don't think was bored out any.

Re: 82 and 83 functional air induction hood question

You're going to want to re think that combo..that 750 is way too big for a 305. I'm running a street avenger 570cfm and even that is considered to be over carbed. Realistically a 305 won't even need close to that.

Re: 82 and 83 functional air induction hood question

Ive actually heard from a few people it was to big, truth be told i may need to pull a few things off i was told it has double hump heads and apparently you're not supposed to have them on a 305 either so i need to find out if its been bored way out or if its has alot of over done crap on it

Re: 82 and 83 functional air induction hood question

Assuming it is a street avenger model, the list number for the 570 S.A. model should be stamped as 80570, correct?

Re: 82 and 83 functional air induction hood question

I'm not sure I found the recipt from jegs and it said 570cfm. I'm not sure where I got 750 I guess I read it backward or what but like I said it was on the car when I bought it. I have a request can you give me your part number off your hood support struts? I've heard that they are diffrent than the ones for a steel hood.

Yeah sure. My car is at the garage, I should be going to do some work on it this weekend so it'll be a couple of days but I can get the numbers.

Re: 82 and 83 functional air induction hood question

I ran the part through Autozone and came up with the correct support lifts for our hood. PN: E95976 or D95976.
