Rebuilding a 350

Trying to rebuild a 350 out of a 1989 here at an affordable price. The engine has 106k on it, so I assume it will need to be machined.

I was thinking this kit: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SU...ComboContents/

If that won't work please tell me and maybe even direct me to one that will.

Also, I figure I need a rebuild kit for the valves and such, but I am not sure which one to get.

Also, what should I do about the cam and crank? Will I need new ones or can I machine them? If i machine them what parts will I need that are different? I would assume bearings for the crank.

I am not looking to make a power house, just get a 350 going in good shape that will last me awhile. Any advice greatly appreciated.

You don't know what needs to be machined and what size parts you need to buy until you've cleaned and measured everything.

Re: Rebuilding a 350

Yeah I figured just have a feeling it will need such things due to the millage and was hoping you guys could give me a rough idea. I would really like to keep all this under 1000, but I don't see that happening... Maybe if I am lucky it will just need a new gasket set, though I doubt that.....

106000 miles really isn't much. If it's been maintained you could get away with rings, bearings and gaskets, and the only reason you'd need those is because you took it apart to look.

Would help to know why you are rebuilding, is there a problem, just a hobby, looking to change something (eg more power). I have about the same miles on my 89 350.

Re: Rebuilding a 350

I am buying it off a guy to put in my 89 camaro. He is selling me harness ecu and a long block tpi 350 for 500. It has 106k and as far as he says he took care of it while it was in his 89 camaro.

I am not looking to make a power house, 250-300 hp and torque makes me happy, it is a daily driver after all. Just want to make sure I don't put it in then the next thing I know I need new piston rings, or bearings, or a whole new crank or something that would make you want to bash your face into wall.

Oh also being I mentioned this, his camaro was a 700r4 automatic, while mine is a T5 5 speed. I was wondering if I will need to reprogram the prom and change the wiring harness? I had a few people told me that I won't have to and the only other clip on the auto that it has that the manual doesn't is for a vacuum solenoid. Is this all true? Would be great if I don't have to tune this.

Oh and I am converting from a TBI to a TPI, this is why I need a new harness and ecu. But I know I need new fuel lines but most places I look don't have them. Any idea where I could get them?

Re: Rebuilding a 350

mikeObrien I have no suggestions but would like to let you know I like the way you phrased your last post. This is exactly how I felt after replacing my front springs and then finding out I needed A arm bushings.

Re: Rebuilding a 350

Oh and also should I replace the valve stem seals? At that point though I already have the heads completely disassembled and I might as well rebuild it I would think. Not sure if I should go about that. I would like to avoid full rebuilds and machining here if possible.

Oh and thanks ed, I have ran into this problem several times doing swaps for my buddies, and then wanted to shoot myself in the foot.

I would definately replace the valve seals. They tend to go alot on these older engines. If you're burning oil, it could lead to further issues.
