Heated o2 bad?

I am not sure if the heater is bad in my new o2 sensor or not. When I leave the key on and come back in 5-10 minutes, the sensor is only a little warm. Shouldn't it be very hot by then?

Re: Heated o2 bad?

It should get very hot within a few seconds, does it have a good ground connection?

IIRC it's like 800F or higher that they warm up to. Both of mine take about 20 seconds before they're ready.

Re: Heated o2 bad?

It is grounded right to the firewall. I have the power wire spliced into the power wire from the charcoal canister purge solenoid. Could choice of power source make a difference?

Re: Heated o2 bad?

That should be ok but usually you'd want to use an add-a-fuse out of the fuse box and give it a 3 or 5A fused line of it's own. Or use that CCP lead to run a relay and get power for the o2 right off the battery (with a fuse).

I'd take it back if it's new..

Is it a 4 wire or 3 wire sensor?

Re: Heated o2 bad?

It is a new 3 wire sensor. It used to be wired into the fuel pump relay, but the fuse for that (still can't figure out why) always blows when you turn the key forward.

Re: Heated o2 bad?

I happened to have just removed my whole exhaust system yesterday, both o2's are just hanging under the car.

I went out and keyed it on, the tips of both my heated NB and my wideband were at 130F after 1 minute and rising.

Do you have a temp gun that you could use on yours?

Re: Heated o2 bad?

I don't have a temperature gun, but it should definetly be getting hotter than it is. It is just warm after about 5 minutes.
