I am completely new to this stuff and I have researched. I have a stock 1990 Camaro 305 TBI and I want to buy a camshaft. I have no idea what to buy. I've heard that you can buy them based on better sound or better performance. Im looking for more performance than sound. Please let me know what I should look for and what I shouldnt. Thanks!

 

This is probably a tech/general engine question. In general though, these are the questions you need to ask:

-Gear ratio in the back?
-Head/intake mods?
-Exhaust mods?
-Torque converter change?
-Can you tune it/get it tuned?
-Do you have an AFPR?

After this you can decide what you want to do. If you go with even the basic/common LT1 stock cam swap (use the one from an Fbody) you will still gain significant power. If you're on a budget this is probably one of the ways to go. The Ramjet cam is decent, and Elgin Prostock makes a 210/215 cam that would likely suit well on a budget with minimal mods.

 

That's the thing, I don't know much about these cars. I just got my first one. Everything on the car is completely stock. I'm just looking to add a little power than it has now. Nothing major.

 

Start with a full (header to tailpipe) exhaust and work towards the cam IMO. You've got a lot of stuff to do before you get into the cam IMO especially if you haven't ever spun wrenches modifying a car before. A cam is a ton of work.

ED:check the stickies at the top of the TBI section, and most any post made by Fast305/Fast355 (same guy diff name.) That should get you on the right track.
