Re: cam question
Id use a fresh timing set with the cam, at the very least. Not a bad idea to get a new gear for the distributor as well since the existing one probably has a lot of wear and tear. Not real hard to change it, but youll need some shims and feeler gauges to set the proper end play. Id also inspect the rocker arms and pushrods for wear. If any of the pivot ***** or pushrod ends are worn or scuffed, the whole lot will need to be replaced. Some standard 7.800" pushrods and replacement stamped rockers will be fine for what your doing. Finally, also look at the valve stem faces and make sure theyre not scored or excessively worn.
Also bear in mind that you will need lifters, too. The best ones for stock applications that Ive run across are the GM performance parts lifters. Theyre quiet, and they have a hardened foot which is very resistant to wear and cupping. Summit has them for not too much. Lastly, dont forget to use a can of ZDDPlus with the oil or 5W-40/15W-40 diesel oil (M1 diesel truck, Rotella, etc.) that has the proper ZDDP concentrations, or the cam may wipe a lobe. A lot less likely with stock springs, but still a good idea to run the addative or diesel oil since theyve phased most of it out in modern passenger car oils. This is especially important during break-in. There Id use the 15W-40 Rotella and the full can of ZDDPlus. For normal use, the diesel oil alone will be enough, but the ZDDP levels are falling in those, too.

Re: cam question
Yeah well thanks so much for all that information. Extremely helpful! The cam did have a package where it came with lifters as well. I will keep the oil in mind as.well as everything else you said.
