please help....

i just bought a 1992 25th anniversary z28 camaro 305 tuned port injection. i test drove the car. it ran good. went back a week later and bought the car. i started it and let it idle the whole time i took the tags off and paid the man. i drove the car to the gas station b/c it was low on gas. the car ran and idled very smooth. i went in gas station to pay for gas and the woman couldnt figure out the gas pump. it took about 15 min to get back out to the car to pump gas. it had died. i put 93 octane in the car and tried to start it. the car will not start now. i replaced fuel filter and the car seems to be getting fuel. under the hood i loosened the gas line and there is gas flowing when u turn the key forward and the fuel pump kicks on. i can spray starting fluid into the butterflies and the car will start and run for just a brief time. do you have any suggestions? oh... and the car had set for about 1.5 years when i bought it. but it fired right up. no long cranking.

Re: please help....

hmm. it has to be a fuel issue. you may have a weak fuel pump. you may have sucked up some sediment in the tank. did you remove the fuel line totally or just loosen it? kind of hard to pinpoint the issue with as little info as i have to work with.

Re: please help....

on the drivers side there are 2 lines up toward the front i took it completely loose and turned the key on. i could hear gas running on the ground. i was doing this by myself so i turned key off and re-connected the line. i took the 2nd one off and gas poured out of it also but the key was not on. when i start it with starting fluid if i touch the gas pedal it dies. when i loosened the lines it seemed like they had pressure. when it broke loose it squirted like it was under pressure.

Re: please help....

fuel should shoot out of those lines like a super soaker. i had a weak pump condition in my 87 z28, i could hear it run and i was getting fuel out of the test port but it wouldnt start. i put a new delco pump in and it fired right away. you need to see what pressure you have at the rail, you can rent a pressure tester at a parts store.

Re: please help....

ok here is some more info. yesterday i got some sea foam and put it in the tank. i finally got it to idle by starting it with starting fluid. it would idle a little rough and did so for probably 20-30 min. if i would give it gas it would idle rougher, and pop sometimes but would not pick up past an idle. could this be bad gas or does it still seem like the fuel pump? i was looking at the tank, it looks like a big job to pull it. is there an easier way? thanx for the help

Re: please help....

it may be bad gas. you should still see ir you can find a tester and test your fuel pressure. the best way to find your problem is to test and eliminate. have you tried to pull DCT's yet? is your check engine light on while it is idling?

DCT = diagnostic trouble code.

http://www.extreme-check-engine-ligh...%20Decoder.htm

read here for more info.

seriously, get ahold of a fuel pressure tester.

dropping the tank is a b**ch. you need to pull the exhaust, i believe the muff. and tail pipes, and drop the rear axle and suspension. on my car the PO had already hacked a hole in the floor over the gas tank, unfortunatley he used a cheap pump and by the time i got it it was putting out low pressure / volume.

when i was trying to diagnose my issue i barked up all sorts of wrong trees. then somone who was sick of watching me waste time and money lent me a fuel press. tester. BINGO! bad fuel pump.

Re: please help....

there should be, sticking up off the passenger side fuel rail, a test port. it is towards the back of the fuel rail. it should have a cap on it, kind of like a valve stem cap on a tire. this is where you hook up the fuel pressure tester.

Re: please help....

ok i rented a fuel pressure tester. what kind of pressure should i have. i googled it and cant find an answer. and also there are "how to" threads on how to cut thru the floor to get to fuel pump easier. but they say you have to cut fuel lines.... is there not a way to disconnect the lines without cutting?

Re: please help....

Well it sound like you have good fuel presure. I'm not thinking you have a fuel pump problem. But a fuel pump relay problem. Here's how to check it. get a piece of wire and connect it to the fues box 12 volt acc . and then to the diognostic pot pin g. You should here the fuel pump running at this point. go ahead and start the engine and see if you still have the problem, if not then its the relay or a bad ground to the relay. A simple fix. the relay is on the drivers side firewall next to the brake booster. just unplug and put new one on 5 min max.
I hope this is it becouse its only a $22.part

Re: please help....

Im going crazy! I changed plugs wires and cap and button. Changed the fuel pump relay and all this helped but didn't fix it. I can rev it up til about 3000 rpm and then it gets rough. If I let off it will idle. And it still won't start on its own. Is there any where that shows firing order so I can make sure wires are on cap correctly? Do u have any suggestions?

sorry jwebb76, i was down and out all weekend with a bruised tail bone.

your fuel pressure it right where it should be. have you set the timing on the car?

click the massive google link for firing order.

Re: please help....

1st, if your going to keep this car do yourself a favor and buy a factory service manual from HELM.
If your car is orginal, ohm check your injs. They are most likely bad. You have fuel PSI so there are no problems there or with a relay.
Stop guessing at the problems and read the manual. It will save you time and money.
I hate to say it but most fixes on the net are just bad guesses that will have you chasing your tail and spending money you don't have to.
On these cars you only "need" a paperclip to check the codes. No need to thro down for a highdollar scanner. (do a search how to check codes)
good luck
