This thread is kind of a continuation of the one that I posted over in the transmission / drivetrain thread about my engine and it's power output.

I'm in the middle of an intake swap now so snapped some pics of the numbers on the heads to figure out what heads I have on this engine:

2 differet ones, an 882 and a462624, the latter is a lightweight thin casting, open chamber 76cc smog head that is prone to cracking. Used on many engines, including corvettes and also has been sold as gm perf. cast iron head. They are junk, the 882s not a lot better.

 

Yeah I figured they were two completely different ones with the numbers being so different.. no idea why the company that built the engine would not have used two of the same style heads at least.

I'm going to be having words with them about it and a few other things next week after I finish the intake swap, then finish tuning the carb and get another dyno done to see where it's at.

 

When building a stock replacement engine, casting numbers do not have to match. As long as the heads are similar in combustion chamber size and head flow, mixing casting numbers is fine for a basic replacement engine. GM produced hundreds of different casting and many have the same characteristics.

 

Yup, those are the engineering marvels responsible for those classic 160 HP 350 wonders of the deep smooger era i the mid - late 70s....

They're not too different from each other. Not really a "mismatch" as such.

But, garbage of the worst sort. The only thing that could possibly be worse, for performance, would be TBI heads.

I wouldn't bother with the original builder; what you've got there is actually pretty common practice. For most people, say a construction company looking to just get their truck back on the road earning revenue, wouldn't make the slightest bit of difference. REAL typical of motors bought on the low bid. Remember, you get, AT BEST, what you pay for... pay the least, you get, AT BEST, .... I'll let you figure it out.

 

That is the problem, I bought this engine as a performance upgraded engine that is supposed to produce 340 hp. Which I'm not getting right now which is why I'm going through an intake swap atm.

I didn't pay for some cheap engine, I paid more than twice as much as I could've gotten a stock crate 350 long block for.

That is why I'm going to have words with the company that built it for me. I want to know why they put known crappy heads on an engine that is supposed to be a performance engine. I'm going to give them a chance to correct it before I speak badly about them because they are a reputable company that builds a lot of engines.
