86 z28 sitting for 10 yrs. wont start
Hi guys newbie here also not a mechanic.I have a z that's been sitting for 10 yrs in garage. I did not expect it to start which it didn't. I don't hear the clicking noise when you first turn ignition on. Is this noise the starter or fuel pump. By the way she won't even turn over and engine light is on. Any suggestions were to start? Thanks anyone

After a 10 year siesta,
Buy a new battery, clean the battery connections but you
May have to replace the fuel pump as well as Ethanol gas tends to cause the pumps to lock up.
I would pull the plugs and put some thin oil in the cylinders to soak for a few days. Some folks use Marvel Mystery Oil. I would also spin it over and see if it builds oil pressure before attempting to start. Probably have to put new plugs in it especially if you spin it over after lube job with the cyl oil lube which will defintely cause it to smoke a lot after it does fire up until the stuff burns off. Don't know what that does for cat converters but better than breaking rings that are stuck or want to stick from no oil.
After you get to the point it is cranking and has fuel pressure you may still have other issues like fuel injectors or other components that are "stuck" or degraded by the Ethanol. Just my experience but you may get lucky. I got one to start after sitting 5 years with just a new fuel pump. You can try a bit of ether spray if you suspect no fuel pressure but be careful of not too much.
Good luck.

sitting for 10 years and never run???
what was done to prep it for storage?
Does it have an automatic tranny?
your fuel lines are probably gunked as is the tank
your auto tranny will go on you because the seals inside will be shot. (being driven is good for a tranny)
I'd suggest flushing the cooling system and don't be surprised iof the radiator and heater core end up going out on you.
But, if it was stored properly it won't be an issue. if it was parked and left........you will be fighting gremlins for a while
an ounce of prevention................

The guys above are right, Hell I just got my car and it has 49k on it was drove now and then and my fuel is nasty and the fuel pump is bad as well as other stuff. That car is going to need about one of everything. Liek was said once you fix one thing there wll be 10 more to fix and so on.
Re: 86 z28 sitting for 10 yrs. wont start
add me to that list. Bought a 92Z last year that had sat for six years. The previous owner drove it a little before I bought it but the damage was done. Ended up replacing the entire fuel system (pump, filter, lines, pressure regulator, injectors hoses. Cleaned the fuel tank. Now it runs really nice.....
Yep, once you get it going, there will be plenty of little things to keep your nights real busy.....

To add some specifics to barnfind's post:
-Take the distributor out and prime the oil pump, while your doing this have someone look at the oil pressure gauge to verify oil pressure. Use a breaker bar to turn the engine over a few times when you put the oil in the cylinders (you have to pull the spark plugs and shoot it in the hole btw) but before you do that, change the oil!!
***Let the oil sit in the cylinders for at least 48 hours to get to the rings. If you do not let it sit, you take the chance of breaking a ring which will then require a complete rebuild of the bottom end.
- The carb will probably need a rebuild.
- If it has fuel in the tank, drop the tank and get the old fuel out, then wash the tank out.
- Verify your fuel lines are clear and there are no leaks.
- Drain and flush the cooling system
- Test your coil to verify spark

I agree on using a breaker bar and verifying oil pressure - just didn't have much time to type earlier today.
you might be able to save the fuel injectors with a flush using mystery oil or something else that works the same way.
Budget sometimes dictates spending a few extra hours of trying things some CPR skills to see if they work or not.

i got a fuel tank for cheap lmk... new..
drain then refill the fluids, bleed everything, and definately check the fuel system.
im sure the pump is done and the tank also, but get a compressor and blow out your fuel lines. dont rush to start it. take your time doing everything possible.

Yea dude don't rush... Take a good 2 weeks before you actually drive it and completely go thru the car... It will pay huge dividends to you!
