What could this noise be?

I recently helped my friend refresh his motor with all new gaskets, valve stem seals, cam and lifters. After all the rockers were adjusted, the motor seemed to be quiet, but there is a mystery ticking noise as the rpms are raised. You cannot hear it at idle, but becomes very loud above 1500 rpms and it sounds like its coming from the top end. I'm thinking collapsed lifter. Any ideas?

What it might be is the valve lashing on a lifter was to tight. Is that possible or have you done this a lot.
