Cracked Power Steering Pulley What would cause this ( Pics Inside)?

Noticed my power steering Pulley was cracked. What would cause this the pulley is about 7 years old. Is it dangerous to run it like this?

No wobble in the pulley. Just want to know what might cause this so I can fix the problem and not have to keep replacing pulleys.

As said above,it's made that way-the rim of the pulley
is rolled into shape from a flat piece and that seam is
welded(actually brazed IIRC).

Re: Cracked Power Steering Pulley What would cause this ( Pics Inside)?

i noticed the quality of GM pulleys is not real consistant
-common to find ones with axial or radial runout of the
belt grooves-on multi groove pulleys, sometimes only
one groove will be affected. When i noticed this,i went to
my local junkyard and bought a bunch of pulleys-
checked them until i found a set that turned true; an'83
wagon provided a perfect crank pulley,an '82 pickup a
true-turning waterpump pulleyThis phenomenon
exists with GM pulleys well into the '90s at least-have
noticed some pretty bad ones from that era.
BTW,same thing with the heater/AC blower squirrel
cage -those ranged from horrid to perfect,my original
was pretty bad-found a perfect one in an '83 cadi,my
blower no longer "throbs"at high speed like the
wobbling original did
