86 Trans Am Idle Problem

Need Help!

I just did a top half rebuild on an 86 TA TPI 305 Automatic. Stock 305, minor headwork. Basically just cleaned out the bowls. Mild cam and headers so nothing crazy. While apart I replaced the IAC, TPS, O2 sensor. Timing is set to 4BTC, Set the IAC and TPS and they are right on. The car won't idle cold. Once warm, the idle will fluctuate between 1000 and 1200 RPM. As soon as you drop it in gear it will sometimes stall, if the computer isn't quick enough to pick the idle back up. I thought maybe a vacuum leak but it's pulling 17 inches. Throttle response is excellent but it's constantly pulling. If you throw it into neutral the idle is at 1500 for a few seconds an then will eventually come back down which explains why it's pulling me down the road. The computer is just not satisfied with the idle and seems like it is constantly making adjustments. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: 86 Trans Am Idle Problem

In case anyone is interested I put a scanner on the car and my O2 sensor was reading .200V. Way lean. Checked fuel pressure and it was 38PSI. With these mods to the engine most likely fuel pressure is to low. I'm going to get an adjustable FPR, crank the pressure up to 45 PSI and see where that takes me. Also thinking about 22LB injectors.

I think your right about the AFPR, id say thats the best first test. If that doesnt fix it work from there. But with just a mild cam, headers it shouldnt be starved for gas.

Now, i may be wrong about this, but double-check anyways... I THINK the timing is supposed to be 6* btdc......

My cars all the way to 10*. Runs best there. Timing is trial and error

Re: 86 Trans Am Idle Problem

The O² sensor voltage is way too low, even for something running in the lean end of the range. Your fuel pressure reading is about right if you tested it while running. KOEO pressure should be closer to 43, but 38 running (vacuum applied to the FPR) is good.

Re: 86 Trans Am Idle Problem

Yeah, I'm not sure why the voltage is so low. I thought vacuum leak but if there is, I can't find it for anything. Plus I have 17 inches which should be good. I'm going to try and get this Fuel pressure up a bit and see where that lands me.

Any thoughts as to why that voltage is so low if it's not a fuel pressure issue?
