Bad starter? 86 IROC

So yesterday i went to start my car after getting done with a car wash and it didt crank so i pop the hood and the positive was melted off the battery it was comepletely trashed the battery just melted when the positive hooked up so i threw a new battery in it and it still wont start i tried banging on the starter and it didt help all it doesnt it kinda click but doents turn the motor over, im going to replace the starter tomoro does anyone think it could be anything else or am i right?

Is the new battery fully charged?

Did you replace the wire going from the battery to the starter?

The battery had a good charge there was no problem there, i could use all the electronical things in my car. So thats what makes me think its the starter

It could be the starter but as G-reg said has the cable been replaced. If not it could easily not be giving a good circuit for the high power that the starter needs.

well the problem is kinda fixed the car will start now but only when it wants to other wise all it does is click and then if im lucky on a turn of the key it will start im thinking it has to do with a conection on my battery

If you end up getting a starter, something to consider is one the Corvette uses, but I don't recall which one. There is a thread that tells which one,
either LT or LS.
