On my 87 TPI Camaro I've got an aftermarket ECM that doesn't support an EGR. Is there a vacuum only EGR valve that I can get? Is there any other way to make it function as normal?

Im not positive on this, this is only an "idea" or something to think about, or look into more.

Maybe you can get a regular egr and get a PROM thats burned to "bypass" readings from the EGR? That way the comp doesnt look for any readings but the EGR still functions.

Of course,you could always just delete the EGR lol

 

Well my ECU is already not sending anything to the EGR. Will it function at all without power being sent to it?

 

Well hopefully someone will correct me if im wrong, but im pretty sure the egr functions off vacuum only, and the EGR temp sensor is what the ECM reads. If thats right, then you should be ok

EGR valves are vac operated; it is what controls the vac you are concerned with.
Having nothing to operate the EGR solenoid you now need a mech means ( switches ) to do the job the computer used to do electrically

 

So should I be able to use my same EGR and just find a mechanical switch? Or do I need to find an EGR that specifically uses a mechanical switch?

 

You'd have to use some kind of electronic control, or drill the throttle body for the timed ports you'd need.

 

It seems that earlier carbed vehicles from GM used the butterflies as a way of blocking off the EGR valves during idle. As throttle was applied it allowed vacuum to enter a small hole in the throttle body which then engaged the EGR.

This is unfortunate for me as I'm running TPI. I was hoping I could just find a mechanical switch to more or less directly replace my solenoid.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can do this?

So that I can drive my car on the streets of California without expired tags and so that I can take advantage of the slight gas mileage improvement.

 

But you're already not legal.

 

I don't care about being technically legal which I've technically not been since I changed to a different block and done countless other mods. I only care that the car appears to be legal and runs clean in the process.

 

Then just put all the original EGR stuff back on even if it's not functional and take care of the NOx with tuning. The more vacuum plumbing and wiring you have to get the EGR to work the more closely someone's going to look at it.

 

They test the EGR here. Plus like I said, I'd prefer to have one that works anyway for the fuel economy benefits.

I might have found a way to get this to work but I need some help on figuring something out here. Does anyone know what kind of signal the EGR solenoid needs in order to turn on? Isn't it like a PWM+ or PWM-? Is it as simple as no power applied to solenoid= off while power= full on? Or are there steps? When it's on and has power is that just letting air through so that the EGR can do its thing?

 

How do they test it?
