82 crossfire rebuild ideas
82 crossfire rebuild ideas
Ok guys.
I am refreshing my 82 z28 crossfire 305.
And am looking for rebuild ideas, I am familliar with sbc and built several, and am looking anybody who has "played" with the crossfire.
Mine ran fine just pulled it to clean and refresh, probably gonna stay stock with the cam and such, stock cr is around 9.5, i got 9.3 by my measurements and cc ing.. However comp does make a computer safe cam for the crossfire, just gathering ideas for now. any feedback will be apprecieated.
Thanks all
C

The CFI system is like later speed-density TBI systems but with slightly better heads, a way-cooler-looking intake system (that really doesn't work much better in reality) and a less robust computer (that nobody burns custom chips for that I'm aware of). If you upgrade the cam I would keep it super-modest. Like maybe a Summit house brand K1102 cam. It's like a slightly hotter cam than the stock L69 HO carburetor motor cam, but stock chips can handle it.
Mostly I'd focus on the stuff that ALL 3rd gens benefit from- namely, a better exhaust system. Shorty headers, high flow 3" cat and cat-back from there. Really wakes them up.
Not that you're going to set the world on fire with that engine using the stock CFI system but I see no reason you couldn't run with a stock TPI motor of similar vintage.

Re: 82 crossfire rebuild ideas
A few things that can be done to get a major power
increase with a crossfire:
-port intake;just a "clean up"porting will help,but to
really get a major improvement a few areas need
built up with welding, then major port job
-upgrade fuel pump;TPI pump is often used, but there
are others also suitable.
-bump up the fuel pressure to 14-15 psi..
-could do mild port job on heads since you will have it
apart anyway
Did all this to "wake up"the stock '84 vette 350,
dramatic improvement was the result-at least 30-40
more HP,about 1000 more usable rpm,and nearly
total reliability since doing the modifications in '95
