Cam install

Ok so I just got my cam today.. Part # cl12-212-2 ordered it from summit. Installed the cam and everything is good so far. Then went to put the cam locking plate on thats when I had problems. The new cam is slightly bigger then the hole for the cam locking plate. I ordered it for a gen 1 styke so itll have the fuel pump lobe cuz im running a manual pump and my old cam did not have a fuel pump lobe on it. Anybody know anything about this? Is it as simple as going to the junkyard and getting a cam locking plate off an older 350? I got a 91 block

You are installing a old style flat tappet cam in a new style roller cam block.
Flat tappet cams don't use a retainer plate , they have no groove on the front for it
Hope you have flat tappet lifters now ?

Re: Cam install

Either toss the retaining plate, or better yet, return the non-roller cam and find a roller. The closest low-budget match for that 12-212-2 would be: http://www.competitionproducts.com/E...uctinfo/E1135/ And when you figure in the cost savings with not needing break-in oil, and not needing to do the extra break-in-oil change 5 minutes after break-in ( rollers don't need it ) it's really no extra cost.

Re: Cam install

Yea I was doing some research and the snouts are different. I called a local machine shop to ask hpw much to grind the snout down so I can use the retaining plate. Its just 30 bucks. but I guess itll be fine without it. It work without one for years back in the day. Should I get a cam button tho or just put it in and leave it alone? Im not worried about the oil, I work at a shop so I can do a couple of oil changes for free

Only roller cams need the plate because roller lifters don't hold the cam in place.
Flat tappet cams are machined so the lifters force the cam to the rear so
nothing extra is needed.
Cam button only needed if putting a retro roller cam in non roller block where it does not have provision for the retainer plate
