Engine burning oil.? Additive for temporary fix.
Engine burning oil.? Additive for temporary fix.
This seems like a popular topic, so I apologize if this is some where in this forum a hundred times. But I am trying to get my car to pass emissions, it fails only because there is blue smoke at start up. The blue smoke blows out about 1 out of every 8 start ups and its just my luck that it does it when I take it in for emissions. I took it to two different shops and they said that I need an engine rebuild because my car blows out smoke when held at high RPMs and is constantly burning smoke. Seeing as I do not have the money for another engine at the moment, im looking for a temp fix, just so I can pass emissions and have my car. I have heard remedies such as using thicker oil, using the lucas engine seal product, even something called Alemite CD 2 that did the trick. Does anyone have any tips or anything they know that will help in this situation.? I am planning on getting a new engine, but no time soon. And also, what damage can be caused from driving a vehicle that burns oil.? I hear ppl saying it does no damage to the engine, just that it burns oil, as their car has been doing it for years. And I hear other ppl saying you will destroy your engine if you drive it like that. I have a 92 Chevy Cam, 179xxx miles on it 5.0 TBI Engine.

Most likely just bad valve seals. Could also be piston rings.
Dont use any of those additives like stop leak, and id be nervous abt adding any kind of additives. I would definetly put thicker oil in. They sell smokeless oil too, so although it doesnt "fix" the problem, you cant see the smoke. I would probably try this first, just for the inspection purpose.
It depends on how bad it burns oil, but usually it doesnt hurt anything. Just make sure to keep an eye on your oil level

dont use any additives they always say theres no technician/mechanic in a bottle that will solve your problem it might just make it worse.
it use to happen to me on my 87 GTA i did my head gaskets took my heads to get checked change valve seals... and it fixed my problem so it might be the valve seals like BLACK88Z says as well. can also be ur piston rings...

here's what I used recently http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...2358&ppt=C1941
I still have a little smoke at start up but it's no where near as bad as it use to be. My dad and I love these Lucas products. They have a good oil stabilizer too
