What oil filter? Simple but a royal pain...
What oil filter? Simple but a royal pain...
I bought an engine with the casting numbers 14093638 (350 5.7L vortec). I bought it and put it in my boat. I seem to be having a oil filter issue and am not sure if I have the right one. The place where I bought the engine they could only give me broad specs about the motor (years 96 to 2000, 350 5.7L vortec) and of course the auto parts store wants complete details. I've looked over many fourms with no luck. So I'm turning to you all for help.
What is the right Oil filter for this motor/block? I'm currently using a fram ph5 but I blew the ring/seal out twice. The engine shop thinks it could be a AC1218 but even he wasn't sure,(dont think I will be doing business there again).
Thanks

Shouldn't it be a Fram PH3506 ?

Try a AC Delco PF 52 or Fram 3980 These are listed for the 5.7 Vortec engine. I'd also take a look at the oil filter seat to make sure that the surface of the adaptor isn't cracked or has some other defect.
Maybe someone out there has another answer.

Check to see if the gasket from the other filter is stuck on the engine. Sometimes this happens, and trouble like this can occur.

Should be the 1218.
Don't think it's the 52; seeme like that's the one for the newer motors (LSx type). Too small OD, wrong thread.
As Steve said, make sure there's not a leftover O-ring from a prior oil change left stuck up in there.
DO NOT use a Fram. ANYTHING BUT a Fram.

If you were using the Fram filter PH5 the Bosch equivalent # 3510 and that is the exact filter I use.Its listed as a 350 truck filter and is twice as tall as the one that is listed for the car .IMO it a great filter that competes with the so called top end filters.
Here's a link to the Fram cross reference page.= http://www.framcatalog.com/Competito...n=3510&em=True
Here's a link to the Bouch filters design.= http://www.boschautoparts.com/filter...ilfilters.aspx
and you can buy it for around $6.00.
Found this at Wikipedia = In mid 1996 the L05 was equipped with Vortec heads used in the 1996 G30.
There is no reason that filter will not work.

I used to be a proponent of using the tall filter for the benefits of more oil capacity, better cooling, and maybe even better filtering. But although the possibility is slim, if your oil filter is the lowest thing to the ground, it would be exposed to damage, and you could lose your oil. Oil filters are made of pretty thin tin. Check by sticking your head under the front of the car and take a look at that long filter. Imagine what you would do if you were a road hazard and then make your decision. I switched back to the filter the catalog calls for, which is usually the short one.

I use Fram filters all the time and have never had a problem with them.
I only said the AC PF52 because that's what was listed for that engine. If that is wrong, thank you for correcting it.
The possibility of a second gasket stuck there is a good suggestion.

Re: What oil filter? Simple but a royal pain...
I'm not trying to steel this thread but would like to add my findings on the tall oil filter I have been using.
With the 1in. thick sandwich adapter for my fluids the filter is flush with the lowest point of my undercarriage. That means Ill be using the shorter filter that is listed for my car.You don't even know how much a small thing like going to a smaller filter bothers me.. I run the extended performance synthetic Mobil 1,so saying that both the tall and short filter are being used with the same exact conditions how much of a difference does this make?
I only drive the car about 2000 miles "mostly stop light to stop light" a year and change the oil evey other year. Will the smaller filter handle that?

The size of the filter will only determine how much oil it will retain. If it is a 5 micron filter it will filter out particles as small as 5 microns regardless of the size of the filter.

Loom at the oil filter for the new vettes, tiny! Gm says it's better to have oil in the engine then in a filter.

If GM says that, they are full of it. If the filter holds more oil, more will need to be added to the crankcase to make up for it.

Re: What oil filter? Simple but a royal pain...
OK, I went to Orileys Auto Parts and looked at the shorter filters for my car. They had a large inventory containing the top rated brands.I decided that if I have to use the smaller filter I would use either K&N or the new Mobil 1 extended performance .Both cost about the same at $12.50 ea.I look at the K&N first and was disappointed to see it was almost as tall with that nut they put on the bottom.I went and looked at the Mobil 1 extended performance ,and it was the regular size about half as tall as the one Im replacing. If its really any thing like the box says, its is more than I expected to find. Here's the link to the Mobil 1 web site showing the filter.

Re: What oil filter? Simple but a royal pain...
Thank you all for the support. I am beginning to think I have a totally different problem. I believe I have an entirely different motor, at least years, than the specs the engine place gave me. I will start a new thread for this.
I believe the oil pressure is to high.
And it is in a boat so I have plenty of clearance.
