BURNING OIL WITH GOOD COMPRESSION

I need some help. I'm pretty sure that i'm burning oil because the smoke is white. I have a 96 Vortec with a tbi system on top. I'm running 15psi fuel pressure. I replaced the plugs, cap, rotor, coolant temp sensor and still have massive smoke under accel. The passenger plugs are the worst. They were black within a mile of driving. I'm leaning towards intake gasket leak that is sucking oil from the valley. This is a newer crate motor with less than 5000 mi on it. Please help. Any ideas will be apprciated.

Re: BURNING OIL WITH GOOD COMPRESSION

White smoke is usually coolant. If it was oil, it would be a blue smoke and you'd be able to smell it.

Re: BURNING OIL WITH GOOD COMPRESSION

Smells like fuel/ oil. I checked the coolant for bubbles and there are none. The new plugs are black after just a mile or so. The smoke is greyish white. I talked to Brian at TBI chips and he said that the injectors might be leaking and flooding the engine. This might have wiped out my oil rings.

Re: BURNING OIL WITH GOOD COMPRESSION

Yep could be flooding injectors as too much fuel will burn white. Plugs being black would indicate too rich as well.

But could be oil, intake gasket is a likely suspect, but oil is usually blue tinted smoke and smells bad

Re: BURNING OIL WITH GOOD COMPRESSION

Does it have valve stem seals on it?
Are you possibly running higher ratio rockers or a different cam that has run the retainters into the seals and damaged them?

Re: BURNING OIL WITH GOOD COMPRESSION

stock 96 vortec. This is a newer crate engine that has been running fine. Smells like fuel and oil, but i thought fuel burned black? The plugs look oil soaked. I would think that my if my tune was good the tbi system would not let it run that rich as to do damage to the oil rings.

Re: BURNING OIL WITH GOOD COMPRESSION

That didnt help the motor. I had to put it on the back burner for a while. I suspect a bad 02 sensor may be making it run way rich. I'm replacing the exhaust now and will put a heated 02 sensor in it. If that does not help, i'm going to re ring it.

Re: BURNING OIL WITH GOOD COMPRESSION

If it was burning oil you would see it loosing oil on the dipstick, are you having to add oil to it???

Re: BURNING OIL WITH GOOD COMPRESSION

I dont know if it is loosing oil. Ive been changing the oil everytime I run it for a while. I'm afraid of further damage with gas in the oil. I just find it hard to believe I wiped out the oil rings but not the compression rings. The plugs and inside of the exhaust look like soot on the inside of your fireplace. I'm in the process of building a new exhaust with no leaks and putting an heated delco o2 in it.

First off, sounds like your MAF sensor or 02 sensor to me. Second off, 15 psi is waaay too low. Either your pump is going bad or your needa change the filter. Its supposed to be around 45 or 50

Edit: Now I see that you dont have an 02 sensor. Get that in there and then report to us.

It says he has a T-B-I system on the motor. No MAF. 15psi is about right for tbi(i think)

Are the injs stuck open and dribbling into the motor? Agree on the 02, get it in there but it really sounds like the regulator diaphram or injs are bad.
Also for giggles, pull the pass valvecover off and make sure the oil drain back holes aren't pluged up.

Re: BURNING OIL WITH GOOD COMPRESSION

This motor only has about 5000 mi on it at best. I did have a bosch non heated o2 in there. Injectors look ok with their spray patern. Oil is flowing back from the heads. This is a stock 96 vortec motor with a 92 computer and tbi on top. Brian at tbi chips tuned it and it ran awesome for 1.5 years, no smoke. I only noticed it after I jumped it and crushed my pass side exhaust on my front diff. That is why I'm building a new exhaust. It might have been smoking before that, It was really windy where I was, and I might not have noticed it.

Re: BURNING OIL WITH GOOD COMPRESSION

Factory spec for TBI is 9-13 psi. 15 is high, though not extremely high. Fuel trims should be able to compensate for that. Were you running the motor with the exhaust crushed on one side? That could be your problem. Restricted exhaust on one side of the engine is going to cause that side to run very rich. Get your new exhaust system in and recheck.

Re: BURNING OIL WITH GOOD COMPRESSION

Brand new 2.5" into 3" with flowmaster exhaust. new heated o2 , new coil, The chip was burned by brian at tbi chips and used to run great. fuel pressure is about 17psi. I'm going to try the stock spring tonight. I have the ultimate tbi mods with vortec heads so one would assume that a bump in psi would be in order.

more logs, I put a vaccum gage inline with the MAP last night. 18" at idle, so I would assume no vaccum leaks.
