High oil pressure and guessing game.....
High oil pressure and guessing game.....
Previously on the guessing game the question was asked which oil filter.
That question was based on information given by the place that rebuilt the motor. They said I had a 350 5.7 vortec years ranging from 96 - 2000. They could not get specific on what it exactly was. The reason for the question was because I kept blowing the seal out of the oil filter and loosing oil. (by the way this is the motor that is in the boat). After trying contestants answers(new oil filters and checking to see if there was an old seal stuck up in there) with no change, I have come to the conclusion I know even less about motors than I thought I did. With that being said I decided not to take their word about the engine specs and found a block number.
# 14093638
This number comes back to the same motor just different years. 87 - 95.
Ok back to the questions, contestants here we go..... What would be the cause of too high oil pressure?
This is what I have now: 1000rpm @ 50, 2000rpm @ 70, 3000rpm @ 80...seal plows and have a spectacular spray down of oil.... Is this to high?
Bonus question, same as the original because I still need to know anyways, what is the correct oil filter to use on the motor?
The awesome part about all of it is that I probably wouldn't even have any of these issues and the boat would run perfect if I didn't have a family reunion next week....hmmm maybe this will get me out of it, doubtful.

What seal is blowing? The o-ring on the filter?

When my motor is cold it will go up to almost 80 at about 3000 rpm also. I don't think that's too high if the motor is cold. I've also never blown a seal with it that high.
Are you sure your not overtightening the filter or not tightening it enough? Maybe make sure the oil filter adapter isn't warped at all.

I have done lots n lots of oil changes over the years and this is the first time I've ever had this issue. I thought maybe the first time it happened with this new motor it was me, made me doubt myself so I actually read the instructions on the filter again after all these years (basically snug plus quarter turn). Bought a new filter and did it again. Then thought it was the filter (Which it still could be) tried another from the guessing game and it did it again.
Re: High oil pressure and guessing game.....
If your trying to make me doubt myself, I'm already there and dont need any more help. Thanks tho. I did say "basically". Once the seal touches continue to turn 3/4 to a full turn more. Without a mini cam down there looking up to see when it touch's, basically snug plus a quarter turn has always worked in the past.

Snug plus a quarter turn never worked for my 350. It will leak oil around the filter seal.
I turn it by hand until I can't turn it any more without leveraging my arms, at this point it's usually way past the snug point, then I get some good leverage and give it another quarter turn.

Did you make sure the o ring from the previous filter isn't stuck on? This can happen, and it happened to me.

Yup, been down that road b4. Thats from getting one bolt super tight before snugging the other, gota tighten them evenly!!!
glad ya found the problem.

On a side note, boat motors tend to have higher oil press since the eng (and oil temp) never get very hot. Mine runs abt 150 degs no matter how hard it is pushed.

Re: High oil pressure and guessing game.....
I just have to say this
isnt that to cold to go into closed loop?? Won't that make the motor wear out faster? I mean you should have to rebuild it like, what, every winter because on the cold coolant/water?? (heck it could be carbed for all I know but I'm just razzing all the jokers that think thats to cold to run a motor)

My friends boats all run cold also.

Yeah it's carbed. 1984 Mercruiser 260.
I'm not aware of any boats that run closed loop. Kinda tough to get a 02 sensor to work when it's being showered with water all the time.

Well, I kinda said it. I said to check if it was warped at all. Thats just a little past warped though
Glad you got it figured out though. Nothing worse than chasing stupid little problems that wont go away.
