Re: Need Advice.

what can I do for more hp?
1. Throw the 305 short block in the trash and build a 350 one instead. Note that this is not the same thing as "buy the cheeeeeeeeepest thing you can find that has 350 cubic inches and think that just because it's a 350 it's a hot-rod".

2. Address all the things about THE CAR, apart from the motor, that make it slow. If it's not a L69 car, it needs gears; if it's an auto, it needs a different converter; it almost certainly needs an exhaust - again, not the cheeeeeeeeeepest thing you can find that says "exhaust" on the box.

$2k is probably not going to accomplish much, unless you can do virtually all the work yourself (which if you're asking a question like this I would tend to doubt) and/or your standards aren't very high.

A great place to start is by examining all this "needs a rebuild" business a bit more closely. It's amazing how many people think that because an engine runs rough, stalls, has a no-start, etc., that it "needs a rebuild"; only to realize about $2500 later, that a "rebuild" replaces the wrong parts, and that they STILL have to buy a set of plugs & wires and a cap & rotor, rebuild the carb, repair all the broken vacuum lines, etc. In fact I'd suggest you start there, do the overdue maintenance, before jumping to th econclusion that it "needs a rebuild", unless it's knocking or something.

Alot of guys don't want to hear it but if you want more HP get rid of 305. Its just not worth building for performance.

By throwing the 305 short block in the trash and getting a 350 one and "rebuilding" "your" 350 instead.

EXACT SAME cost; maybe even less. Close to 20% more power if all else is equal.

Cheeeeeeeepest power money can buy.

When will you get it? We've all been there. 99% of us chanting the 350 chant have thought we could make something of the 305. 99% of us wasted money trying to do exactly that. But getting a 350 is neither costly nor difficult, and once you try it, you'll never go back. If you're really dead set on wasting many months and many thousands of dollars, only to regret it, here ya go: http://www.popularhotrodding.com/eng...s/viewall.html We've discussed this several times. https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/engi...305-now-3.html

Re: Need Advice.

Replacing a 350 with a 305 isn't really a "swap"; only difference is, the holes down through the middle of the block are bigger. Externally, a 350 block is IDENTICAL IN EVERY WAY to a 305 one, year for year, over long periods of time. That's what makes it such a great deal. You just throw away the one with the stupid little holes, and put in one with smarter bigger holes.

Best thing to do is go find a 96-2000 Chevy/GMC truck or van motor that's wore out and useless at the boneyard. You get the factory roller apparatus, Vortec heads, and ... 350 cubic inches, for probably $50. Only things you'll have to change are, your intake manifold, and the flex plate.

It'll be THE BEST $50 you ever spent on your car. By far the CHEEEEEEEEPEST power money can buy. Pour your "rebuild" money into that, instead of the mistake that came in your car.
