clicking noise with RPM's

First of all, Hello im Jason, nice to meet ya. 1986 z28 305 carb 700r4 auto.

so i searched for an answer to this and i found three or four posts but no answers. So i was hoping someone who had this problem had an answer.
Theres a clicking noise when my engine revs up. It sounds like its coming from the center console or maybe the lower dash. I cant trace it exactly. It does it when the car is in any gear including park. It gets louder above 3500 and usually starts around 2500. sometimes it goes away. sometimes its louder than hell. i had originally thought it was the speedo cable so i replaced it even though it was still good. then i ended up melting it to the exhaust cuz i routed it wrong. put the old cable back in and now the speedo doesnt work at all! damnit. I know its not an exhaust leak either. So basically does anyone know what causes the noise? And maybe what the hell i did to the speedo? i think i chewed the driven gear up maybe. when i check the tranny out and the speedo area i have to have the car up on ramps and fluid will leak out if i try to open the cover of the speedo drive. will it all leal out or just a little? Thanks for any help, not an idiot just new to camaros and no real experience with transmissions.

Re: clicking noise with RPM's

Okay, double check and make sure that the sound isn't coming from under the hood and the sound is not just leaking into the car. I had a similar issue with RPM sync'd clicking noise in my 87 last year, it ended up being a snapped push rod. Not saying that I think that is your issue, just saying to make sure as a precautionary measure. As for the speedometer not working, I would verify that both ends of the speedo cable are seated completely. Removing the speedo gear is not hard and it is only a little messy; set a catch pan underneath it, IIRC it'll spew about the equivalence of a 20 oz pop bottle (give or take). You will have to top off the fluid afterwards but it won't drain all of it.

Oh, and welcome to TGO

Re: clicking noise with RPM's

Sorry to wake this thread from the dead, but I had the exact same issue.

Went 13 months before I finally got resolution to this ticking noise.

I had previously replace the mechanical fuel pump with an Autozone Airtex replacement. Needless to say, it is a cheaply made pump and was the root of the ticking....springs inside were weak, plunger rattled. As the pushrod actuated the pump, at certain RPMs and intermittently, the ticking would come and go...softer then louder then disappear randomly. Ticking was coming from what seemed like right behind the radio while sitting in the car. (Never made a noise while below 1800 RPM)

The rattling pump was vibrating and resonating thru the metal fuel line that crosses over the "hump" from passenger side to driver side (right behind and below the radio!)

Needless to say, I replaced the fuel pump with a Carter pump....no more ticks!

Hope this helps someone out there...I went over a year before getting an answer to this annoying noise!

Re: clicking noise with RPM's

if noise coming from transmission bell housing area.....then possibly a cracked flexplate...more common than you would think...see it a lot in my shop on gm vehicles...just an idea for ya
