how to remove cam dowl pin?
i ordered an lt1 cam for my build and it doesnt have the pin sticking out of the end of the cam, but my original cam does, how do i remove this pin and put it in my new cam?

I have also had to do a little work on the part of the pin going into the new cam. I have had to peen that end ever so lightly to give it a snug fit. A little Loctite for insurance.

could i use a pair of vice grips to remove it or is a punch and hammer the only way?

you could also just go to the hardware store and get one the same size. if im correct the pin is more for locating and its not much of a load bearing piece.

You can Vice Grip it out. Might have to do some slight filing afterwards to get the "teeth marks" off it so it will slide into the hole in the cam gear, though.
Obviously, bench test this BEFORE you go for final engine assembly.
Once the cam gear bolts are tightened down the dowel's job is largely done. It does not bear a load. It's just there to index the cam to the cam gear. Unless, of course, you don't properly tighten the bolts!
