just bought 85 camaro no power built engine please help
hi all thanks for looking i just bought an 85 camaro z28 body an interior is beautiful but the engine looks great an runs like **** i drove it home had no power putting hard shaking not firing on all cylinders. Here is what i know from taking the engine partially apart it has a gm performance mid rise intake edelbrock carb vortec heads domed pistons gear on gear drive timing set up lunati voodoo cam part # 60105. Had vaccume gage hooked up only had 5lbs of vacuum could not get it to idle do to the miss fire on cylinder 4 an maybe 6 once it was above 2200 rpm it came alive an ran better but still had a miss i took the front of the engine apart and discovered that at tdc on the compression stroke both crank and cam alignment notches on the gear both were at 12 o clock witch i know is not right but im not 100 percent with it being a race cam im just trying to get this car up to drive an its driving me nuts. One more thing after i adjusted the valves the putting went away but still had a miss. I did not think the engine would run like that. Thanks sorry for the long post. appreciate any insight

Change spark plugs, sp wires going to right plug from distributor, check rotor button in hei distributor, gas could be bad with water in it, check fuel pump for debris..

both crank and cam alignment notches on the gear both were at 12 o clock witch i know is not right
Cam & crank dots both at 12:00 = #1 & #6 TDC, #1 firing
Crank dot @ 12:00 & cam @ 6:00 = #1 & #6 TDC, #6 firing & #1 exh valve closing & int opening; exactly ONE FULL TURN of the crank and ½ turn of the cam away from #1 firing; easier to build the motor that way even though it's NOT #1 firing
Has nothing to do with "race" cam.
Dome pistons and Vortec heads is a recipe for issssues; the chamber shape is different in those heads, and VERY FEW domes will fit without hitting something.
Doesn't sound like a very good combo regardless. WAY too much cam for a typical street setup which is why you have no idle vacuum.
I'd suggest a couple of things after replacing the plugs and CAREFULLY checking that the wires are hooked up right.
First thing I'd do is pull out the push rods and check for bent ones by rolling them on a sheet of glass.
Next, a quick compression check may find interesting things. Any cyl that has higher compression than others probably has a cam lobe rolled off. My gut tells me that's what you'll find.
Whereabouts in the Cinci area are you?

All compression as around the 150 range new plugs new 8mm msd wires i still need to check for bent push rods but im actually in nky hebron area. Another sympotom is it seems like its loosing compression into the cooling chamber because after sitting an.idling it start shooting alot of air comes out of the cooling resavor as if the coolant was.boiling has a mechanical fan so i know the cooling fan is working. U guys think head gaskets? Im not looking to use this as a daily drive more or less a weekend cruiser an hittin the strip

By the airport, eh? I pass that way once in a while.
Probably not a head gasket problem; that'd show up in the compression test.
Just because the fan is "mechanical" is no guarantee it's "working", let alone "adequate". Could be too small, or a bad fan clutch; could just be that it's missing the shroud; could even be a POS "flex fan", GUARANTEED not to ever work right.
Start with the simple stuff first. Plugs, wires, firing order, rocker adjustment. Everybody always wants to either blame "timing" (it's not that) or jump straight to the expensive invasive stuff lke head gaskets. Calm down, take a deep breath and get LOGICAL with it. See my signature for helpful advice.
Same goes for the cooling system.
