Heat coming from Gear Shifter and smoke with no overheating

I have started to notice that when driving my 83 Camaro, One I have noticed that I can feel heat coming up from my gear shifter. I also noticed that when I arrive at a destination from driving in the camaro, I can smell smoke in my shirt and i'm pretty sure its coming from the heat from the gear shifter. You cant see any smoke or anything like that but putting your hand over the shifter, you can feel the heat. Also after driving for a while, smoke comes from the left side under the hood but the car isnt running hot or anything like that. Could this be a problem in my exhaust system or something?

To me it sounds like oil dripping onto your exhaust manifolds. I would take a close look at your valve cover gaskets and surrounding area,

Re: Heat coming from Gear Shifter and smoke with no overheating

Theres no oil dripping from what I see...my motor is fairly intact no drips or leaks from anything for the most part. Only thing I figured is my camaro is lowered and sometimes if I hit a bump too hard or go over a speed bump the bottom of my car will scrape. Could it be that that may have put a crack in one of my exhaust pipes or sumthin and its smoking? I dont know i will check the oil dripping suggestion a lil more thorough again tomorrow in the light.

So that oil dripping thing can cause the heat to come through the gear shifter though??

When you get the first problem figured out you should seal up things under your console.
