84 trans am water sensor issue

so i managed to get my hands on a n OBD I comp from a buddy that runs a machine shop near me, i plugged it in and it came up with something about a Loop closed/open and reading of -40 on my water temp with the wording, water temp signal High or open. could this cause me to burn crazy gas and make the exhaust smell weird, and also make the cars idle fluctuate and make the block shake (knock) im really confused if any one could help

-thanks!

oh, and on an unrelated note i wanted to thank everyone who helped me with my question on my Nova project car. it really is a load of work like an uncooperative child, i noticed my water pump went bad on it and took it the length of 3-4 block before the car died (wdong distributor order) since then (monday) i have been running it and moving it around a few yards every day since i noticed the lead and the squeak (move from garage to garage on where my shop is because where its stored and where its worked.on.are sepperated) I always fill the radiator before running it and make sure there is enough water before starting, am i doing something bad? I just put my freshly machined head back. As fod the temp sensor for the light, it dosent work so all I know is by touch after.moving it a little that the block is hot

Sorry that the unrelated.is.not.related to.tbird gens but.im having issues normal nova site and.cant get in, and im really desprite for answers.on the questions for both my cars

thanks a ton guys!

Yes. Probably a bad temp sending unit.

Re: 84 trans am water sensor issue

Means the ECM coolant temp sensor is either disconnected, bad, or the wiring between the ECM and sensor has been damaged.

Remember that the ECM sensor is NOT the same sensor that runs the temp gague on the dash. ECM sensor is a 2-wire affair up near the thermostat housing. Gague sensor is a single wire jobbie in the driver's side cylinder head between the #1 and #3 spark plugs.
