cam choice for 383 hsr
hi all ! right now my engine setup is a 383 hsr xfi 280 with 113 corvette heads realy good port job and valve angle done. i dont know what hp im making with this combo but my best drag time his 12.355 sec at 107.03mph 1.730 60 foot , tko 600 , gear 3.73 street drag radial tire. iroc-z 89. so i need another cam due to a lifter faillure and i was wondering if there a better cam for my setup . i think a little more lift will help maybe less duration. 3 cam :
comp cam xfi280 one i used.
230/236 duration .050 576/570 lift at 1.6rr 2000-6000 113 lsa
howard cam 180525-12
227/233 duration .050 560/560 lift at 1.5rr 2300-6200 112 lsa
howard cam 180265-12
233/241 duration .050 530/545 lift at 1.5rr 2400-6000 112 lsa
18635-10
236/236 duration .050 560/560 lift 1.5rr 110 lsa
so some advise on those cam

Re: cam choice for 383 hsr
Im using different heads (ported trickflow twisted wedge) on a 383 with 11:1 compression, with an extensively modified holley stealth ram, so obviously its not a direct comparison, but Ive found the crane 119661 to be about the best match on a street car, that sees some strip time, as far as average power and drive-ability, but the CROWER 00471 made more peak power the crower makes more upper mid and upper rpm power, but its just not great for cruising below 3300rpm

keep in mind the HSR is designed to work best in the 3500rpm-6500rpm power band so the cam should match that

What numbers on the heads
Sure they are not your limiting factor?

Really should have flow numbers to dictate what cam you should run. Do you have a flowsheet? It's not everything, but it's definitely helpful.
I vote you get a custom grind cam since it's all the same price. Get something built for you.

Re: cam choice for 383 hsr
A guess at best ,should and actual can be a lot different ,
if your looking at the same online chart as I am ,there is no flow significant increase over.500 lift so a bigger cam is wasted
Best I have seen online is 230cfm @ .550 on some heavily ported 113's with 2.02's
Still reckon your small heads , not the cam are holding you back
Most have at least 195's on a street 383 ,( unless they have TPI ) some of us are running better than 275cfm on our 383
My ported 195's
.200 @ 140
.300 @ 200
.400 @ 245
.500 @ 274
.550 @ 280
.600 @ 282

Get.something.for.your.unique.combination.
AKA: CALL SOMEONE WHO DOES CAMS FOR A LIVING AND NOT JUST A DISTRIBUTOR.
Buying a shelf cam is just dumb when you're paying the same cost for a custom cam.. especially since now you actually have a reason to buy a new camshaft. There are much better cam designs than Comp's line; particularly considering Harold Brookshire did all Comp's major grinds (like the XE line) and all his best/most recent ones are with Lunati.
Before I even went that route, I'd still call someone (or multiple people) who make custom cams. There's a few really good ones that are active on YellowBullet and can design one specifically for your setup.

Too bad you so far away for the Drag Racers auction over Thanksgiving in Indy.We have been buying parts there for resale for over thirty yrs and there a some really good deal parts from motivated sellers. We met some guys from Canada that imported heads under the blanket duty free.
Bumped into them at Cayuga with the heads on the car.
The point of this post is I would think you guys in Canada would have the same kinds of auctions(just not not as big as Indy) where it isn't all or nothing choice and where your not buying blind over the net because at auctions you get to inspect hands on before hand.
