Starts then dies almost right away
Starts then dies almost right away
I have a 91 RS 305, one night on the way home I ran out of gas (I'm not even sure if I did now), managed to get some help pushing it into a gas station and I filled up. I started the car it idled for a second then died. Tried again this time giving it some gas, ran for a second and died. Called a tow truck and got it home.
Now I started replacing parts.
The first thing I did was replace the fuel filter on the off chance there was some junk in it. The car ran slightly better but again for only about a second before dying, unless I was giving it a lot of gas. I checked the injectors and they seem to be spraying properly so I thought I could rule out the fuel pump and injectors.
I moved on to the cheaper parts I could replace. I replaced the coolant temperature sensor and the idle air control sensor at the same time. No changes.
I then went to the MAP sensor, bought a new one, no change. However during this time I pulled the MAP sensor and the car would actually idle when the MAP sensor was not connected. It would idle at about 1200-1500 RPMs but it was idling unlike previously.
I returned the new MAP sensor assuming it wasn't the problem and that the problem was in fact the EMC. I just replaced the EMC and again there is no change, the car will start then die unless I gave it a ton of gas.
I'm pretty stumped and I'm not sure where to go from here. Here is a quick and dirty rundown:
Replaced fuel filter
Replaced coolant temperature sensor
Replaced idle air control sensor
Replaced MAP sensor, though there was no change so I returned it, old one still on, idles high when removed but idles unlike when connected
Replaced ECM
Thoughts?

Testing components could avoid replacing parts that are still ok. Next thing I would check is the TPS. There are threads on here with testing and setup procedures.

What does your fuel pressure look like?

I agree with Brando. Sounds like the fuel pump is on its way out. This is common when you run out of gas. Fuel pumps don't like to pump air.

Check for a TWO speed fuel pump circuit. There will be TWO resistors, one for low speed at idle and the second high speed for cruising and WOT. Sounds like the low speed resistor is burnt out.
