10psi out of mechanical fuel pump

cars been running rough since I built it, always want to die in gear. figured I'd start with the basics. fuel ignition and compression. started with fuel as its easiest because I don't have a timing light. went to AutoZone and got a in line pressure gauge put it in and its up round 10 or 9 psi while running. cud this be why it doesn't idle in gear

Is this a carbed engine? If so, that should be fine.

Re: 10psi out of mechanical fuel pump

......... 10 psi might be overwhelming the float needle valves and over fueling the engine ... try an adjustable fuel pressure regulator set to no more than 7 psi ... check with the carb mfr for more exact requirements .............

too much pressure, you need a regulator

Re: 10psi out of mechanical fuel pump

I bought an AutoZone regulator max 5.5 psi. carb is an edelbrock 600. lots of people said 5 psi is great for that carb is that true. pulled a plug pure gas it was still wet with gas. I've yet to put the regulator invite is it possible the hi fuel pressure is wat was making the car die in gear

Re: 10psi out of mechanical fuel pump

5 lbs should be fine, High fuel pressure causing fuel fouled plugs will cause idle issues.......

Re: 10psi out of mechanical fuel pump

that's wat i'm sayin so i'm gonna install a msd box and buy new, e3 plugs when I do that. how hard is it to put a msd box on hei? and do you believe that could be my idle under load issue.

Re: 10psi out of mechanical fuel pump

You dont need all that!!!!

Standard plug/std heat range is fine

HEI by itself is fine. MSD is a waste on your car

You got too much pressure you need a regulator or a differnet fuel pump altogether. 10 lbs youll still have issues period. Its too much for a carb.
