Set of vortec heads, intake, and a mild flat tappet cam are a great way to get some more bang for your buck, all of which can be had for around 1k new. The stock smogger type heads are the biggest restriction in the engine, and have lousy compression, somewhere around 8.2:1 by my calculations. Vortecs will get you up to around 9:1 and a lot more flow.

On my goodwrech I have the TFS super 23 195's with an XE270 roller (similar to that covered in part VI), and that setup works quite nicely, but is expensive. The older vortec heads and modest Isky cam worked quite well with good low end torque when I had them with my old TBI setup. If you go the vortec route, the stock springs can be used with a mild cam, but its good to check the max lift. Mine bottomed out on the seals at .460".

Re: 350 GM Goodwrench Power Adding

I'm planning on getting a goodwrench 350 for my firebird in the spring.
There is a GM dealer selling on ebay for $1425 with free shipping. I can't rebuild my 350 any cheaper, and remaned short blocks are going for almost that much money.
My plan is to swap in a bigger cam before I install it in the car. A year or 2 down the road as my budget allows, I plan on swapping on some better heads with smaller chambers to bump up compression.
You can get these complete aluminum heads off ebay pretty cheap!

OR

You can get the cast iron Vortecs for about $300 each that would also work great.

Or you could just buy a Vortec long block that comes with the heads and has a factory roller cam (not a big one- just the regular pickup truck cam). Last time I checked Summit had them for about $1900. Would make a roller cam upgrade much less expensive later since you already have all the roller gear (no pricey aftermarket conversion required).

If your car runs nice, I would look at mods to support what you have and get you ready for future mods. Your profile says you have 2.73s, I would go with 3.73s and a 2500 converter. That's a big bang for the buck.

Re: 350 GM Goodwrench Power Adding

As far as the goodwrench goes, if you only plan on running a cam that can use stock springs, then its a good deal. The flat tappet with softer springs will be just as reliable as a roller. If your wanting to stab something big in it, though, then getting a roller block up front is a much better deal. Flat tappets with heavy springs equals wiped lopes after a while with street driving.

Re: 350 GM Goodwrench Power Adding

Would i be able to supercharge to this engine with out full blown modification like new pistons. I dont want to run a large supercharger just something for like 50 to 75 hp. Im new to power adders like superchargers and turbo's.
