No fan on the front belts

Alright so i thought id ask if it needs to be put back on or what, because when the motor was swaped out, the belt driven fan at the front was removed, just the thing it bolts to is there now, and there are 2 fans mounted to the raidiator now, and it's like this because the belt driven fan wont fit between the raidiator and its mount.
So is this going to cause problems, and also the 2 fans dont come on from what i see when i started it and looked they were off, is there a way to make it easy, and just wire up a switch in line, to turn them on, or what should i do?

They don't until the engine gets to the correct temp

Re: No fan on the front belts

I am really confused.. Alot of cars now only use electric fans and only use the belts for the waterpumps and accessories. If the vehicle was wired correctly, the fans will only come on at a preset temperature when the engine gets hot. I have mine turn on at 210 and shut back off at 180. It is all sensor switch operated which I programmed into the computer.

ohhhh I see lol im used to my previous 80s crewcab chevy trucks, so anyways i also discovered a metal box thing that has wires going to fan, battery, then the coil and when i touched the coils wire to three of the posts the fans kicked on, but how can i wire up a toggle switch to kick the fans on when i want, and to be sure they come on, thanx

Re: No fan on the front belts

Depending on your fans one wire goes directly to the battery, The other wire will go from the fan to the switch, Then from the other side of the switch to chassis ground.

They go through the relay .
You use a switch to ground the relay , not the fan itself

He has never stated what year TPI he has so the fan relay may be controlled by a temp switch in the head
or by the settings in the ECM
In any case he doesn't seem to have got the engine hot enough to see if the fan(s) actually come on by
them self so he wants to do the shade tree mod without trouble shooting 1st

The relay is the right way and is how all factory GM cars come out. But, if someone wants to wire a basic fan and doesn't understand how to put a switch into a series circuit. I can't explain how to throw a SPST switch on a bosch 30/40 amp relay with a 30amp fuse.. That will just complicate the answer.. And wiring it directly in series, of course, everyone like to use an illuminated rocker switch which will eventually overheat and will burn the vehicle down as no-one thinks about current draw, which without having a simple schematic drawn out, is to complex at this second. LOL.

From his other posts the OP is getting a good education on auto mechanics so he may as well read this as well

We don't know what car he is dealing with but in most cases the Dk green / white wire from the fan relay is the control wire.
All he has to do is ground that wire through a switch to run the fan(s) manually
Still doesn't negate the fact that if everything is working correctly the fans should run automatically

What has me utterly confused was when he stated this:

"i also discovered a metal box thing that has wires going to fan, battery, then the coil and when i touched the coils wire to three of the posts the fans kicked on"

Anybodies guess ;
maybe he took the hot feed to the coil ( key on ) and applied power direct to the output terminal of the relay so the fan ran?

Re: No fan on the front belts

I cant explain the metal box thing i was talking about, basicaly it is all metal, copper wire coiled up on one side, then three post on top that the wires push on to, anyways it keeps the fan from staying on i guess, and it already has 2 20amp fuses wired in close to the battery. So im guessing I can slap in a switch connecting the positive wire, then ground a new wire on the switch and it will work, or will it burn up the switch

Re: No fan on the front belts

Ok afterr reading vetteoz link i realize the copper thing is a relay, and its all wired up the same as those pictures and also i read than i can put in the switch after the relay and it wont burn up so thats good haha, Also i can do this with anything rite just wire it up then put a switch after it?

Re: No fan on the front belts

The following conversion may be a bit involved, but it's worked well for me for a number of years (I like the fact that both fans come on with either AC or head temp):
