engine light

every time i get on the highway or travel at continuous high speeds, my check engine light comes on. i decided to run the codes, and instead of the 12 first, it blunked 3 times, as if saying 1 1 1, flash pause flash pause flash pause, then it gave me 12, and then i lost track. as i was playing with it, my engine ended up getting to around 240 degrees or so, and im not sure if that has to do with the problem or not. im probably going to change the oxygen sensor since that's most likely the problem....any other suggestions? is it normal for a 305 tbi to overheat sitting in 55 degree weather?

Re: engine light

It will repeat. Let it cycle three orfour times so you can be sure which codes have set. Your radiator my be plugged or thermostat stuck closed. Also fan may not be running if electric.

i made sure the fan was running, and the heat works in my car wich usually means the thermostat is working properly.....would the radiator its self have been hot? i decided to touch it out of curiousity....it was barely warm. theres no mud in the resivour or anything, so it woudl be weird is the rad was clogged. i do have a small leak on the bottom hose of the rad

Re: engine light

Yea I check my codes with just key on, no eng running, the fans will come on during that process of reading codes, so did that cool down the radiator maybe ?

If Rad was cool - have you lost coolant ?
