85 Irocz tpi running extremly rich, won't idle, dies

Ok, I'm new here, I got this 85 iroc z28 from a friend. He has had it for a few years. Let me give you some background. It ran good when he got it, 305 tpi. one day he put it in reverse to back it up in the yard and it just died and would not restart. Some things he replaced are:

ECM
Ignition module in distributer
Cap
rotar
wires and I think plugs
MAS
tested fuel pressure I think it was 45 psi

still no start. Him and a shade tree mechanic determined it had jumped timing, they found the timing gear on the cam messed up. replaced the timing set with new gears and new chain. He swears the marks on the gears where lined up. Also, they pulled the dist to put in parts.

He says it started up fine, but then ran rough and would die unless you keep your foot on the gas, and it would not go very fast, when you give it too much gas going down the road it wants to load up and die.
It is still running very rich, strong smell of gas coming out the exhaust, it still will not idle. I think the SES light is burnt out, will replace that first thing.

Has anyone had this happen? I need suggestions on things to check, I don't want to just throw parts at it like he did.

You can build a cable for real cheap if you have a older laptop with a db9 and use win aldl or buy a cable and use tunerpro. Double check you base timing with the est disconnected, fuel pressure line for signs of fuel. Ohm the injectors when hot and check the resistance on the cts. This could even be a mis adjusted tps poisoned or lazy o2 or leaking csi.

what do these anacronyms stand for:

csi
also, what ohms at the injectors?

Est electronic spark timing
Cts coolant temperature sensor
Csi cold tart injector
