Smog Removal with headers????

Hey all,

I broke the bolts off my exhaust manifolds when taking them off when removing my heads on my 1991 pontiac firebird trans am 5.0, they were rusted like no other.
So I am buying headers, probably shorties, but I can't find any with the smog things that go into the original manifolds. Can I just get rid of these and not worry about it. Is it going to effect mpg/engine codes?

Thanks

Re: Smog Removal with headers????

Hooker 2055s have them, and come with a nice Y-pipe.
But yeah as long as you don't have a visual/tailpipe no need to keep it, no codes, no effect at all on driveability. Check the stickies in one of the subforums, probably exhaust, running car without a.i.r. or somesuch. Pull the pump off while you're at it. Should just need a shorter belt.

Re: Smog Removal with headers????

Ok yeah I did some reading and im just going to get rid of the smog crap. How do I change the PROM to not account for the air coming from smog for the O2 sensor.

Re: Smog Removal with headers????

As I understand you don't have to. It pretty much only puts air to the manifolds at startup then it switches over to the cat.

Re: Smog Removal with headers????

Yeah, it doesn't make that big of a difference but I want to do it, I think I might have figured out what to modify I just have no idea how to mod the chip....

Also what do I do about the smog pump? If i remove it than what belt do I use?

Look on Ebay for a "smog pump delete" pulley. This will allow you to use the factory size belt, which is what I did.

However, if you search on the site here, you can find the proper routing to bypass the smog pulley. It also requires the purchase of a slightly smaller belt.

You shouldn't have to mod the chip at all. Just leave the EGR "installed", and the relay near it hooked up. The computer isn't smart enough to know the rest of the system is missing.

Both the Hooker 2055's and Dyno Don's emissions headers have the O2 sensor bung welded in place on the drivers side.

Re: Smog Removal with headers????

If you are just using them as a daily driver there isnt a reason to go with a huge header these will def give you more then a manifold and not lose the low end at all
