fuel sending unit internals

well the fuel gauge wasnt working so i dropped the tank (really easy, very suprizing) and started messing witht he sending unit only to discover that the part that holds the float was missing a push nut and that inside of that box thing has a metal wish bone thing, now the question is what is that wish bone thing for? i was thinking low fuel warning light but am i wrong?

Re: fuel sending unit internals

pictures. the 1st one is where the float level sending thing is housed, the 2nd pic is wut it looks like inside, the metal wishbone thing im talking about is in the top case, it moves by hand easy enough but i dont see the float moving it by itself.

Re: fuel sending unit internals

As long as the pin on the end of the float shaft is making steady, constant contact the curved piece inside the housing, your gauge should be reading. Check your ground wire for the sending unit and make sure it's connected good. Plug just the sending unit back into the harness while the tank is out of the way, make sure your ground wire is hooked up, also turn on the key, use a test light and make sure your hot wire back there is getting voltage, then see what the gauge does when you move the float to different positions. If your gauge doesn't read at this point, then yeah, the sending unit is probably toast. Or the gauge in the dash is no longer good, but that's not too common.

I'm really not sure what the "wishbone" thing is either. As far as a low fuel warning lamp, I don't think any 3rd gens ever got one. I could be wrong though, but if it ever was available, I don't think it was a very common option.

Re: fuel sending unit internals

ok so the wishbone actually moves, the lever on the float shaft moves it, but mine was messed up. also from what I can tell and the numberous Camaros ive owned, our cars don't believe in low fuel warning lol

Re: fuel sending unit internals

My 69 Camaro w/console gauges had the option of a low fuel warning light, but yeah, I don't think I've ever seen one on a 3rd gen Camaro.
