car just died....I'm at a loss.

Ok the GTA was running fine, then it just died. Fuel pump is running I can hear it. I have no spark. I replaced the ICM in the distributor and the ESC on the firewall. It was getting a code 42. Engine cranks over but no spark...Suggestions?

Check to make sure you have power at the Distributor would be where I would start. If you have replaced the ICM and ESC then I would check power, followed by visually checking for rotation under the cap.

Why did you replace the ESC Module? It has nothing to do with generating spark. Above the ICM, in the distributor, is the pick up coil. It, and the pole piece and timing core below it, create a magnetic pulse that the ICM then converts into the primary ignition pulse and the crank reference signal to the ECM for injector pulse and to activate the fuel pump while cranking and running. The pick up coil is almost as common a failure item as the ICM. Check it with an ohmmeter. It should test at 800-1000 ohms. As suggested, check for power on the pink or red wire to the coil with key on and while cranking.

Use a test light to check at the white wire of the coil for a flash while cranking. If no flash and the ICM and pick up coil have tested okay, disconnect the four wire connector at the distributor and check for spark while cranking. If you get spark now, the problem is in the wiring to the ECM. A short to ground in the white wire will cause code 42 to set and can cause a no start no spark.

If still no spark, test the coil with an ohmmeter or try a known good coil. The coil should test at .5-1 ohm across the primary windings. Between the coil wire tower and ground, it should test at about 27Kohms. There should be no continuity between the primary windings and ground.
