Having trouble removing smog pump pulley
Having trouble removing smog pump pulley
I'm trying to replace my smog pump and I can't even get the pulley off. I kept the belt on, even tried holding the belt with one hand to prevent it from moving, but the belt still moves, instead of the bolts coming loose. Maybe I should try propping the pulley with a screwdriver? Would using a breaker bar make a big difference over a socket wrench? I've been thinking of getting a breaker bar anyway.

Well the problem is I can't get the smog pump off without removing the pulley first. (Unless I'm wrong.. but I'm pretty sure the bolts that attach the smog pump are behind the pulley.)

Best way to get em loose is impact.
If you don't have access to air tools, try putting the longest box-end wrench you can find on em, and hit it with a hammer.
I know of no good way to wedge the pulley.

It shouldn't take a great amount of effort to break those bolts loose. If I remember correctly I got mine with a 3/8 air ratchet.

Re: Having trouble removing smog pump pulley
That's surprising. I recently needed some of the torx bolts that hold the smog pump to the motor, so I had to remove the pulley to get to the bolts I needed. Of the 4-5 cars I tried, every single one of them came right off with just the serp belt holding it in place. The real bear is getting that 3/8-16 torx bolt out that holds the pump to the aluminum accessory bracket. Those are awful!

I rather not use air tools yet, at least until I absolutely have to. I still haven't bought any yet, but my friends do have some.
That's weird. I'm pretty sure my belt is tight enough. I've seen a loose belt, I can feel the difference in slack. Maybe I need to try to move it more suddenly? Like someone said maybe with a hammer for even more shock. If I was too weak, wouldn't it not move the pulley at all? Because I can get it to move the pulley every time I turn it. Maybe it just needs to WD40, though I read it's not good to spray WD40 on the pulleys, and I have to reuse this pulley.

Pulleys don't mind WD40 in the least. Not that it's going to make any difference, though.
But since you broke it loose with a wrench and a hammer, it's no longer a concern, eh??

I didn't break it loose yet. I am eager to try the hammer though. I'm waiting on some other parts first.. I'll update later today
