Lengthen fuel sending unit

I am in the slow process, I emphasize the word slow, of building a pro-touring style/fun track car out of my '89 IROC. I have been doing some reading on the 1LE fuel tank and its internals. Even though the 1LE tank was thought to be special due to the internal baffling, I read all '91-'92 cars came with that style tank. That makes finding one of those tanks a lot easier now.

The part I am stuck on is the fuel sending unit. I have found the part numbers for the 1LE style sending unit, but the thing is almost $400 from GMpartsdirect. That is a little hard to swallow, considering the only major difference is it puts the pump, about a 1/2"-1", lower to the bottom of the tank. The dual strainer is much easier to purchase, even though it is almost 10Xs the cost of a standard one.

My question is, is it possible to modify the factory fuel sending unit to be 1/2"-1" longer without running into any major issues? My thought was to cut the sending unit and weld/whatever an extension piece onto it. What are your thoughts? Thanks.

Why not use a 3/8 union fitting ?

That is a damn good question. That looks like a perfect solution. If it turns out to be a little long, I could just cut the pipe a little.

Re: Lengthen fuel sending unit

Hey I was wondering would you guys be able to help me? I recently bought a 85 iroc z TPI 305 that sat for 8 years and I have to replace the fuel tank and sending unit. I checked out summitracing and they offer this sending unit http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sg...t/model/camaro would this be an OE replacement? The thing that's bothering me is its not specific.
